COTM 83 First Spoiler - Rome, the Ancient Age!

Reading Requirements
  1. You must be able to research a Middle Age technology.

Posting Restrictions
  • Please be discreet about AI locations; however, feel free to discuss contacts and trades.
  • No discussions of the middle ages (or later)
  • No screenshots of any middle-age (or later) resources.
  • Absolutely NO discussion of any other currently active 'X'OTM!

Demigod level - pretty difficult. Lots of decisions to make. Did you establish your capital on the opening spot, or move elsewhere? How did you growth go? You are isolated, so that helps. How did contacts go? Are the AI giving you much trouble at the end of the ancient age, and if so, what do you plan to do about it?

Hear ye the tale of woe.

Settled in place, built Warrior, then curragh and sent Warrior to check on the GH 3 tiles NE. Oops - 4 barbs pop out, kill warrior and worker and destroy a tile.
Finish curragh, build another warrior, send him to check 2nd GH 3 tiles NW. 4 Barbs pop out, kill warrior, destroy what's left. Also, Barb camps appear next to both GH places, with several Barb each.
My map is covered in Barbs, and me being traumatized caused some brain blip, so I built warriors to go and attack those camps, instead of settlers to settle and disperse them.

After building 2 warriors and getting them killed I finally realize the stupudity and switch to build a settler. Just then a decease strikes, getting me down to 1 pop. ****!

Cleared that mess somewhat, met everyone with curragh and traded almost to parity by ~1000BC, but I'm so far behind and my island is overrun with other Civs already, so I'm abandoning this game.

I tried popping huts by settling near them. This gave me a fine collection of conscript warriors. I originally though about trying a slow 20K, but didn't do much about it. I researched ceremonial burial first and then made the republic slingshot, becoming a republic just before 1000 BC. As usual, I didn't expand fast enough, but I made it through the ancient age pretty smoothly.

I settled in place with the idea to jump the palace inland
later. Built a Curragh followed by two Warriors and a Settler-
Worker-Worker-Settler combo which led to the abandonment of Rome in
2190 BC. Rome was immediately replaced by Antium whereas the Palace
popped up in Veii three tiles inland.

Veii was set to the task of building a Granary, which with the help of
a Forest cut was finished in 1830 BC. Under despotism, a six-turn
Settler factory produced three Settlers at sizes 3.3 -- 5.3. Under
Republic, the factory was working a four-turn cycle at sizes 4.0 --
6.0. I used both Food Bonus Tiles and a mined Hill, so no sharing.

I went straight for The Republic without detours and discovered it in
1400 BC. I postponed the Revolution until the beginning of the Settler
Factory cycle in 1350 BC.

Before that, the Curragh taking an eastern course provided Contact
with three foreign tribes and so could trade for some of the minor
Technologies. It was then lost trying to cross the open Sea.

The next goal was to reach the Middle Ages and Chivalry as fast as
possible. The Middle ages were reached in 690 BC.

After having built enough Archers to at least ward off the local
Barbarians, I started making war and alliances for war happiness. I
met Carthage as I finally managed to send a Warrior down south on our
island. Aztec lands were reached only with a Galley.

Apparently, some Goody huts were located on the southern peninsula,
which I found populated with Carthaginians. I had kept my two Warriors
as Military Police. Of the two Huts in the north, I wasted one through
cultural expansion in my new capital.

For the next phase, the plan is to churn out Settlers and Archers
until Horses are connected and then ship over Knights to the
neighbours. No real plan to build a Great Wonder, so probably there
will be no Golden Age at all.

Quick Start Challenge

I started playing after having finished GOTM113 and so was too late to
submit my QSC. That's a very unwelcome effect of having both games in
synchronicity. This is a summary of my achievements at 1000 BC:

_7 Towns
17 Citizens
_1 Granary
_1 Temple
_1 Harbor
_5 Workers
_1 Warrior
_3 Archers
_1 Curragh
_2 Slaves
_4 Contacts
_4 Embassies
_2 Alliances tied to Peace Treaties
