COTM 89 First Spoiler - Iroqouis, the Ancient Age!

Reading Requirements
  1. You must be able to research a Middle Age technology.

Posting Restrictions
  • Please be discreet about AI locations; however, feel free to discuss contacts and trades.
  • No discussions of the middle ages (or later)
  • No screenshots of any middle-age (or later) resources.
  • Absolutely NO discussion of any other currently active 'X'OTM!

Deity level - did you found in place or did you look around a little first? Raging barbs - with all the units the Deity AI had, were the barbs any problem? How did contacts go? Were you able to use your Mounted Warriors, or was the Deity AI too strong during this period? How were things going as you entered the Middle Ages?

I struggled a bit with the raging barbs losing a few workers.

Contactrs came to me more than me making contacts, I lost my first warrior when he popped a hut, really shouldnt bother doing that on deity.

I missed one contact for a very long time though.

even though i did not pop huts i faced the furor of the deity barbs. after quite a nice start with a fine set-up i lost 2 (!) settlers (!!), one due to taking a risk and one due to sheer bad luck, when it was even covered by two units...

MA barb uprising was ok then, because by that time i had already enough units to destroy most camps.

i was first to Philo, but only 1 turn later i could have traded for CoL and got Rep!!! i felt quite lucky for a second, and so depressed in the next.

around 1000bc i know 5 civs (i think, don´t have the game at hands), entered the MA, revolted and will get most of our corner of the pangaea. 2nd lux connected, 3rd is out of reach unfortunately. i prebuilt a few chariots and lost the first upgraded MW to a barb horse, when attacking!

the lack of food in the core slows down the expansion, especially i am lacking workers.

i am playing very short sessions and with little concentration, so this will not become a good game from my side, if i will be able to finish in time at all.

No time for a detailed first spoiler. I had trouble with the barbs insofar that they prevented me from settling the western part of the core area for a long time, but I don't recall losing any settlers. Workers I did lose a few.

I got CoL as a free tech. I researched nothing after my 50 turn on Republic (which surprisingly had a little trading value left after I got it, which almost put me in the Middle Ages.) I aimed at saving money, trusting mounted warriors to take over Babylon and Zululand, in whose far corner the Great Library was located. This went as planned, although it took a long time. The ancient age ended after the capture of Ulundi and the Great Library (with the end of Zululand a turn or two away) A problem was whether I could benefit from the Great Library by means of 3500 gold worth of upgrades and at the same time keep the potency of the Temple of Artemis, which is located farther away from our homeland. I was pretty sure at least two civs had learned Education, which would have made ToA obsolete for us in the future. But that belongs in the next spoiler, strictly speaking.

full risk to get the sling, ending with anarchy in 1400bc. :)
Enter the MA in 975bc. No war in the AA
Stats:
9 towns, 28 pop

First COTM I've played in a long long time.

Went well, lots of room to expand. Didn't lose any settlers (my settlers avoided the barb huts), though lost an absurd amount of warriors. Beelined for philosophy, got literature as free tech, built GLib in Salamanca in 730BC. Techs roll in, enter MA 710BC with 10 cities, 38 pop. My cities are a bit spread out though, and annoyingly 2 civs sneaked in cities to the south.

Have 3 lux's (though incense is not hooked up yet), but no iron. Infrastructure is pretty good but I definitely need more military so I don't get run over.

Hope I'll actually have time to finish this (sadly, today is the last day of spring break).

Memento has the upper hand with a republic sling shot but there is much to be done still. Silversheep can abolish scientists and templar_x is as always ready for the thrust. And it's a rotten 0 degrees Celsius in my corner of the world so I'm wondering if there will be a GOTM120 soon.

just rust, megalou, just rust. the thrust thing was way in the past, when nights belonged to a good Deity game and not to watching over the sleep of my baby boy.

not to make that sound like i would not always again choose the latter ;-)

My two children and the everyday care they need make me all the more interested in taking on games, just because they are such an indulgence and such easily within reach. So I have to wonder, where is GOTM120? I wouldn't want to sound upset, though, since I fear that our rock and our beacon civ_steve once again has some sort of health issue. If so, get better!
