Could someone please help me build a good ship?

I haven't played much of the game yet. So far I have just spent hours on designing my own fleet, which I really enjoy. But I can't seem to build a decent ship with weapons and defences. I tried first of with my huge ship. I have all the techs cause I first want to see how could it can get, and then I'll start the game over.

I tried building something with just missilies, but I can't get it to be more powerful then the ship that is already in game. Why is that? The most I get when I build my huge ship is a cost of 2800 BC. But the most expensive is 3500. How do I get a really expensive and build an "ultimate" ship?

Another question. And how come the placement of the weapons is important? The number of hit points on that specific weapon depends where on the ship I put the weapons. Why is that?

This link to a thread at the GalCiv2 forum may be helpful to you:

Also bear in mind the potential benefits of using some constructors to set up a basic military starbase to add some defence and offence bonuses (and delete the starbase after the fighting if appropriate).

This may be related to a known bug, predesigned ships always assume max miniaturization, hence they are always better than your custom designed ones. I believe they fixed it already in some patch.

corn then i play not the same game as you as my problem i always have the prob that my own made ships extremely overpower the standard ships

That's a problem? I think that's a good thing. :mwaha:

if i can use the same ship 20 battles after each other then it spoils my fun thats like attacking a warrior with a modern tank (with civ IV with III it still would be funny) if i wish to finish someone quick i want to make a fleet not use one freaking ship

also something funny a 8tp ship that beats the crap out of a medium ship

Yeah, I can see how that might spoil the fun of the game. My only suggestion would be to move a difficulty level. On Cakewalk, you could kill a fleet with a fighter (I've done that before: 1 'X-Wing Starfighter' w/ a Doom Ray + 5 Battleships = 1 X-Wing and Space Dust)

i tend to get to evil pretty fast and get that laser to fast when i have like 2 attackers per base i have then things get pretty lethal for my foes but defence is always a tad slow as i overpower offence fast

I am wonder what difficulty level is it?

Computers get 200% 300% and 500% resources on the top 3 levels, which is somehow challenging. I heard the AIs in this game will also "play against the human player" in higher levels.

Huh? You can place a weapon anywhere on a ship without affecting stats. How it looks doesn't affect its stats at all.

The main thing is to sacrifice systems for weapons if that is what you want (even engines, which is easier to do if you have "Fleet Bubble tech in the ToA expansion), but also realize a ton of weapons on a scrappy fighter, even with optimal weapon vs. defense strategizing, won't help whittle down the enemy's hitpoints if the weapon is still pretty low tier.

And also a ship's value isn't in its expense, since some tech advancements mainly reduce cost or size of components. In real life, military programs get canceled for being to expensive, and GalCiv2 tries to be realistic in the economics like this, unlike most games where you just level up along a tree.

So I am playing that scenario in the campaign ('Siege') where I am fighting the Dread Lords with their doom rays and I can't seem to get my tech up fast enough to have a suitable defense or offense against them. I believe the answer may lie in designing my own ship - the early campaign missions seem to focus on teaching one aspect or another of the game.

Wondered if anyone remembered this or has a comment?

The most useful ships in the game are either:

1. A colony ship with 2 ion engines (get rid of the life support module).
2. A constructor with 2 ion engines (once again get rid of the life support module).

They cost about the same as the standard versions, but move twice as fast.
