I just had an idea for a modification that could add a little spice to the game. Would it be possible to make a unit called a "sub-leader" or something similar, that has a small % chance of appearing after a victorious battle (with greater chance for more experienced units)? One could create different flavors of sub-leader that could have specific functions, for example:

FIELD GENERAL: merge with a unit conferring a permenant +1 attack or defense bonus, or a HP bonus

ENGINEER: help rush an improvement (maybe worth X number of shields)

DEFECTOR: a remnant of the defeated unit, which has a 1/1/1 rating, but may join a city to boost pop by one

DRILL SERGEANT: When stationed in a city, serves as a barracks

Anyway, I'm sure some of these would be difficult or possible to implement, but would it be possible to create a mod that did something like this? Seems like it would add to the excitement by introducing a new semi-random element. If possible, some of these unit types (e.g. ENGINEER) could be triggered by something other than a battle... such as having cities with a certain science or culture output have a certain percentage chance of producing one of these sub-leaders.

Comments... suggestions?

It can't be done, as only one unit can be the battle created unit. If there had been an option for the unit chance of appearing in battle. and Minimum level for appearance for the units two of them could be done.

The Civ III Leader unit is a big disappointment. It has very little real effect on combat itself. Napoleon, Hannibal, Caesar and the like did a lot more than just create Armies.

Huh? "very little real effect"? IMHO, an army has very significant effect on battle. It almost unbalances the game. That's why GLs are so hard to get.

personally i find armies to be useless int his game

now if you could throw one stack against another stack in combat, ala civCTP, that would work alot better.

but what is the use of having 3 swordsmen in an army if it can only attack once, and only 1 enemy at that?
one thing i did was to make it so armies finished improvements instead of leaders, as in the disbanded army provided a work crew
now if armies were made so you can attack as many times as their are units int he army, that would help... and/or allow units to be unloaded/upgraded etc.

also, i have not tried this, but can an artillery unit in an army bombard? if you could carry an "army" in an army, it would be better too (like i make stacks of1 def infantry, 2 attack inf, and 1 artillery - if i could put all those into an army and have them work right, thatd make things easier)

well anyway, yeah most of your ideas, while nifty, cant be done right now, although you could have buildable engineer and general units (as in one builds armies, one rushes improvements)

again, those are good ideas though

You can give bombard ability to army itself. As almoste any other ability - treat terrain as road, airdrop, hidden nat etc. I'd say a lot of space for modding here.
