Crash Problem in detail

Hey I have a prob with my CIV IV game, I thought it had been mentioned before but can't find the thread, so I am re-doing it with more detail. I am not a tech person with computers, so excuse some of the roughness.

I have all recommended system requirements.
1.8 GHzprocessor (Celium processor=misspelled)
512 MB ram
128 MB Radeon 9200 PSI something
Direct X is fine
more than 1.7 GB free
computer is a HP packaged deal, I added the Radeon 9200 besides that, everything is factory

So I can play Civ IV for a while, sometime not, and my screen goes black. It doesn't seem there is any ryhme or reason to it. But though the monitor goes blank like on safe mode or something, I can still hear the game music. I obviously can't do anything. I have to hard boot my computer up again.

I will say the smaller the world I create and less tribes I have on AI it seems I can at least play it. Today I tried to load a "Huge" World with 12 AIs I couldn't even get to move my initial settler before the monitor blanked out on me. I also have this problem with THe Sims 2. I can usually play for a while though, and sometimes it doesn't happen. But this morning when I was trying to load the "Huge" world I had created it seemed it always happened before I could make my first move.

Anyone have any ideas? Very frustrating. THanks for all your help and ideas!

I have the exact same problem. I played the first game just fine as I accepted all the defaults, no probs. Tried a large map on Terra (?) world type and as soon as you click OK to go into the map it blows out the video...literally, all i am left with is a black screen and the monitor light is yellow. The pc is still going though as I can do a poweroff with the button and it shuts down properly. I would assume its a video card/driver issue, although I don't know what to change as the game works otherwise. I lowered the display options in the game and that didn't help.

Specs: A64 2800+, 1GB Ram, XPSP2, Radeon 9000 64MB (old!!!) w/Omega drivers 2.6.25a(?).

Updating to new Omega drivers fixed the large world crash for me, although it is a bit slow :-( I can live with that until I get a better card though.

Don't have the omega driver, the omega drive screwed me up, I had to delete the driver and re install the card as new. If anyone can help me with my issue it would be great! I am at work and get off at 7am eastern and am hoping to play my game when I get home.

Thanks for all the advice.
