Hi guys! Finally installed Civ IV last night, and because my only civ experience is Galactic Civ (and not very much with that) I wanted to try the Tutorial. Here's what happens.

~I click on tutorial and the pointer turns into a spinning compass, after a few min it crashes to the desktop w/out an error code.
~Tried updating the game through the "Check for updates menu" and got the same reaction
~Googled help and found this forum, d/led and installed the final 1.74 patch
~Tried Tutorial again, got a message saying the game needed to restart in order to load tutorial mode, clicked ok
~approx 3-5 minutes pass before it crashes to the desktop w/out an error code
~went into graphical settings and set all to minimum
~tried tutorial, same issue
~reset graphics to highest
~started a new game, setup a world, chose a leader, got to first turn and saved (want to do tutorial first).

Please help? Galactic Civ was a lot of fun but I felt frustrated because I didn't feel like I knew what I was doing, and because of that I REALLY want to try the tutorial before I go poking about in Civ IV.

For ease of use, dxdiag included (strawberry fresh scent sold separately)

Welcome to CFC :band:

the tutorial certainly should load - though I'd recommend something like
Sulla's walkthrough instead.
That said: if you click on advanced then on load a mod in the game and load any other mod the game shipped with - does that crash as well?

I'll go ahead and give the link a try. As for the mod, I tried both the Civil War and Tutorial mods with the same effect yet again.

so it should indeed be patched correctly.
next question:
open windows event viewer: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427
check the time of the last log in the applications part and close
start the game, load any mod, after it crashes
open windows event viewer again and post any new logs that might have come up.

I wanted to report that I was able to get things running correctly. It seems that the problem was COMODO firewall causing massive conflict issues, even when Civ IV was on the "safe" list.

Thanks for all your help, you can mark this one as solved, and you can mark this user as needing more IT experience.
