So following the fantastic sale on Steam I decided to buy the Gold Edition of the game to play with a friend on my Mac. My computer meets the hardware requirements to play the game and as far as I can tell should run it.

However, every time I try to run it, steam will load the game and I get to that windowed splash screen. Clicking "Play Game" turns the screen black (or, if windowed version selected, a black window appears) for a few seconds before crashing.

I've restarted my computer multiple times, I've reinstalled the game, I've verified the local files, I even followed steam's advice and deleted the start-up movies incase they were crashing the game. All of this and still nothing seems to work.

Does anyone have any suggestions so that I can start to enjoy what looks like a wonderful game?

Try running Civ 5 from it's home directory, for me this is C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization V
