I have been playing Civ3 on my Mac using OS 9 for a couple of months now. Very ocassionally the computer crashes while I play and I lose all my saved games from that session. This as you can imagine is extremely irritating!!!!

Has anyone else noticed this and, if so, is there someway to recover these games?

Yes, it has happened to me about 4 or 5 times, enough that I think about it during really good games. After the last time it happened, I would save, quit, then start Civ3 up again to ensure I had that save - just in case.

Question: Are you playing Civ3 off of a disk image? It only happens to me when I'm playing off a disk image, never the CD. Again, its a rare occurence.

On 9.2.2 it crashes very very rarely, but about 1 out of 5 times my Ti Powerbook hangs and needs a reboot, if I do cmd-p while being in a docking station and using external monitor and keyboard.

It never happened to whipe out the saves, however. Do you do regular system maintenence? First Aid, Norton, DiskWarrior?

On Mac OS X, it sometimes (2or 3 times per game) takes a long time (up to 30 seconds) to finish the computers turn, but never crashed.

The best way to tell the difference between a long pause and a hang is the in-game music. If the music keeps on going, the game is running. If the music stops and stays stopped, the game has locked up.

I hope I will be pardoned, but find the music annoying and have it turned off. :)

Brad: Do you have any other reports on the crashing problem with an external monitor in use?

I always play off the CD. It crashes very rarely but it is extremely annoting when it does.

I use a Ti Powerbook. I have OS X but I dont use it as I have many applications that I use for my job that dont work with that system. Is Civ 3 more stable in OS X?

Sometimes when I manually -QUIT- Civ3 while in MacOS X 10.2.1, the daft thing gives me an "Unexpectedly Quit" message?!!

How utterly bizarre? :)

Makes a change from the AI doing something dumb!

Note that there is no need to play it off a disk image. You only have to mount any disk image named "Civilization III", a 16kb empty dummy is o.k. and you can play it right from the hard disk.

No, in fact I run it on a two monitor setup. I'm alway interested in OSX crash logs though.

This is still 9.2.2.

Ok, Brad. I've just recently started using OS X regularly, so my install of Civ3 was originally OS9 (I didn't bother to reinstall). Things seem to go well early on, but starting in the second age, when I try to open the Science screen...bang . I still have my saves, so I can recover, but this seems to be repetitive.

So, any thoughts? if you're interested, how do I generate a crash log to show you?

cheers :king:.

Okay; since no one's looked in here since yesterday, let me add some details to my last post.

I now have crash logs and save games (both before and after the threshold) for anyone who's interested (Brad? :D )

OS: 10.1.5

The problem is limited to the Science advisor. All others open and work fine. The moment the second Age begins, though, trying to open the Science screen crashes the app either immediately, or if the page does open, mere seconds later. This occurs regardless of whether I open the screen directly (via F6 or a dialogue link) or from another, stable, advisor screen.

Right, I'll leave it at that. Comments & suggestions most welcome.

Cheers.

Did you try reinstalling it in OS X? Dunno, that seems to work whenever something is wrong...
;)
If that doesn't work, maybe brad has a solution?

Yes, I believe that working on an installed version via MacOS 9 tends to leave it abit crashy when running it in X. In fact, I think Civ3 crashed a few times when I did the same thing as the original poster in this thread!

Recommendation: Bin the old installation of Civ, and reinstall with X running - then see what happens.

WARNING: Self-flagellation in progress

Mea culpa...:splat:...mea culpa...:splat:mea maxima culpa.

Thanks all for your suggestions. For all the years I've had a Mac, I should know that the first thing to check on when a problem arises is the preference file! I'd already re-installed C3 from OS X, but didn't blitz the prefs...go figure :p.

This time I did the full monty, re-install, fresh prefs, stuffed the original app...[dance]. Happy happy, problem gone!

Now, off to find those nifty irrigation graphics again!
