I am totally stumped.

I installed and deleted CIV 4 three times due to a "Cannot Locate CD Error". Upon the fourth install, I got a "Cycle Redundancy Check" error that completely halted the installation.

I've done everything I thought may fix the problem:

I've swapped out my DVD drive and have tried using a CD drive-same CRC error.
I've tried copying the contents of the 1st CD to the HD-same CRC error.
I've tried my second DVD drive-same CRC error.
No luck!!!!

Someone please help! I called FireAxis and they just told me to "clean the DVD lens" and to try everything I've tried already.

The media (disk) is fine, it installed on another machine with no problems and I've tested other CDs...they install just fine... Argh!! Help!!!

Specs:

3.2 Gig P4 HT
2 gigs ram
180 gig Serial ATA
DVD drive (NEC)
DVD R (NEC)
Windows XP

Run a search on your computer for this folder:

Sid Meier's Civilization IV
It is usually buried in docs and settings/.
If it is there, delete it.

Try again.

Tried that-doesn't seem to work... I still get a "cyclic redundancy check" error. :(

Well that is just fubar!

Other cds work but this one doesnt.

safedisk or bad disk or dirty disk.

Do you have burner software?

You could try cleaning the disk with standard old diswashing liquid, water, and a towel. Just clean it like it would spin and dont cross the grain.

Make sure the disks are totaly dry before you attempt to use them.:D

I have had 2 game disks that had surface crud that refused to load untill I did that.

As for the safedisk thing. Dont know what to tell you there.

I do not know.

But if you tried everything else and all your other cds are working then that pretty much narrows it down to bad disk, dirty disk, or anti piracey software.

The error you are getting is data transmit error commonly cuased by a bad or dirty cd.

it must be the anti-piracy in the disk... how frustrating!!

So are you comming to that conclusion because you cleaned the disk and that did not work, so you returned the disk to get a new one and that did not work either?

yes, exactly. I cleaned the disk-same problem. I returned the disk and got a new one-same problem.

I finally got CIV4 to work. Here's how:

I had my friend copy the 1st disk to a CD then I installed the copied material to my computer's harddrive. Then, I used my original CD to install from after I copied the 1st disk to the harddrive from the copied CD...

Finally it worked... What a headache. For a game that has been on the market since 1991 (CIV1) I am in complete shock that I had such an issue with install.

I've never, in my entire gaming career, had problems like I had with CIV4...
