I've been searching all over the site now for about 45 minutes and I still can't find a tutorial on how to create unit graphics.

I have a lot of free time on my hands at the moment so I kind of want to learn something new for modding Civ IV.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Thanks for that info, I'm going to work on it now, but one issue I have.

My unit is a submarine. The subs in regular Civ IV have the lower half that is below the waterline look like it is under water and some animations bring it fully under water. Any idea how that works when making the model?

They are animated to submerge.
It's the same as any other moving part on any unit - just a bit easier, because the whole model moves. The usual and most easy way to achieve that is to pin toyr new model on the anims of the existing sub. Should be covered in the tutorials above.
The water plane corresponds to 0 on the z-Axis (in nif-scope or other tools) - where the coordinates axes cross.

Not sure what sub(s) you want to model, but there's already about a dozen different custom subs made by Coyote (of WWII vintage) that sit on the surface and submerge correctly (and are far superior models to the default).
