Crop-rotation?

Also, he said that you must plant different types of crops in order for your society to flourish. If you keep planting the same thing in the ground, your people will get sick and work slower.

While the science of crop-rotation is very real, I would have thought the scale of Civilization was too small for that!

Edit: Maybe it actually represents plague, like the Great Potatoe Famine, and not crop rotation.

According to this article u have to grow different crops around ur land... hmm now im even more confused :crazyeye:

I hope, this guy misunderstood something.
The only thing I could imagine would be that based on the region (northern/southern, equatorial and so on) different food would be available. As we know, food shall be distributable, so if you offer different food to your inhabitants, this would add to their health.

Any other system would just add another component of micro-management, as far as I see it.

I, too, hope he misunderstood. Going to each of my cities and thinking "Okay, I'll switch this tile to potatoes and this tile to corn and this tile to fallow" does not sound like a good time to me. It's going to be a LOT more time in MM, unless it's automated, in which case, what's the point?

Like storm, I would have thought Civ's scale to be too big for us to see the effects of crop rotation. Unless each of our cities only has 21 farms max?

I think he means that each type of food resource you have in your empire will increase your overall health - like luxs act in Civ3 towards happiness. Now Banana's, Wheat, Sugar, etc will be tradable like luxs and have more of an effect.

(Will tobacco give negative health affects? Trade it to your enemies - now we will be able to health bomb our opponents into submission :satan: ;) )

One of the biggest events in history was the Poppy Wars: that was a luxury, grown as a crop, now fields of it are being replaced, and doesn't Sherlock Holmes inhale it? :)

It's also the real reason Bush invaded Afghanistan :mischief:

Dunno bout that, Afghanistan still produces a hell of a lot of heroin, and it seams that US and all other armies don't do much about that. Anyways, maybe Bush is thinkin' heroin goes mainly to Europe, it's our natural and secret weapon. :crazyeye:

*cough, cough*

I think what he implied, Kosez, is that Dubya needs them poppies for his personal use.

It probably means that having many different crops growing on your territory just improves health. If that's what it is, I think it's a good concept. No population would be healthy with just one kind of crop, although some Incas on the Andes got almost all of their nutrition from potatoes. But that wouldn't be at all possible with wheat or especially with corn.

I think the implication is that a varied diet is better for health, not that CIV will be SIMFARM micromanagement hell.
