As per title really, never played the original col and I'm either blind or there isn't much about it in the civilopedia, can anyone shed any light what's the point of making a church and sending colonists to work at it ?
By default, you generate 1 cross per turn, and every X crosses, you get a new inmigrant waiting at the European docks. The amount of crosses you need grows after every free inmigrant you get. Sort of like Great People and their points in Civ4.
Crosses attract people from Europe. If you go the Docks screen, you'll see a progress bar at the bottom. Every time that fills up, one of the three potential colonists at the top right will pop out and be available for shipping off to the colonies.
I'm not sure you only get one of the three all the time. I swear I had three petty criminals waiting for me and got someone completely different. There might be a safety valve built in.
