Cultural loss bug?

I was in the final stages of a long and excellent game as the Americans - huge map, all victory conditions except wonder and domination, Deity level. I was level on tech with the Koreans (both shooting for Synthetic Fibers as the final tech needed for spaceship), and there were 2 other small civs left alive - the Celts and the Hittites.

I thought I was looking very good for a spaceship victory and I was all ready to feel very proud of myself, having survived all kinds of things int he course of the game, including having all my core cities nuked...then I lost unexpectedly to a cultural victory by the Koreans, and I can't understand why.

I had eliminated the Celts on the turn before I lost. The Koreans had 119,500 cultural points (approx.) I had about 44,000. Because it's a huge map, the rules say that the threshold for a cultural victory is 160,000 points. I'm playing with the latest Conquests patch. So my question is...what's going on? Is there a bug with cultural victories, or have I missed a rule about 3 or fewer civs? I had been monitoring their culture carefully and had figured that I had nothing to worry about and would build my spaceship before they hit 160,000. I have been playing this game for a long time so I am more than a little angry about this...help!

I tried uploading the .sav file but it's bigger than the 500k limit even when zipped.

They definitely did not have a 20k culture city, I think their top city was about 8000 points.

You can use the file upload at the bottom of the page. It has a 3 meg limit.

I tried again Chieftess but it tells me that the limit is 500k...?

Okay, I've saved the F8 screen from the turn just before I lost. I've just noticed that the cultural points for victory are showing as 100,000, but I was *definitely* playing a huge map...

*puzzled*

No, not the link you upload. Take a look at the links in my sig. It's the File Upload, not the File Attachment. The file upload recommends 500K, but has a limit of 3 megs.

Maybe the Korean culture is 2/3 of the total culture of all civs? Like cultural dominance? check to see if the other civs had approx. 16295 total culture.

That doesn't mean anything, playshogi.

What I can see from the screen indicates that somehow the Culture Victory is set to Standard-map levels, even though this map is Huge. Did you create the map in the Editor, perhaps, and accidentally set the Culture Victory to Standard levels?

If it was set to standard levels, wouldn't Korea have won way back when it got to 100,000? He's still not to 50k, and he said they are the only two civs left of any real size. Maybe it's set to large and shows standard on the F8 screen? A double bug!

I had eliminated the Celts on the turn before I lost.

The Celts had more than half of Korea's culture, preventing Korea from winning until the Celts were eliminated.

That would make the most sense, but he said the Celts were really small. It's easily checked, of course. Just reload the autosave from the turn before the loss, don't kill the Celts, and see what happens. You know Cuivienen, this is the second time this week you've pointed out something obvious that I couldn't see. I'm becoming jealous of your mind.

The Celts had a lot of culture so it makes sense that their elimination allowed Korea to win through cultural dominance. The only mystery is why it was set to 100,000, but I thought of something. I'm using Snoopy's enhanced terrain graphics, which means that instead of going "New Game" I load a scenario. I guess it's possible that Snoopy doesn't have everything quite right and that his terrain scenario overrides the normal cultural victory condition setting?

I managed to upload the save file - thanks Chieftess :-)

Here it is for anyone interested: http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/Lincoln_of_the_Americans,_1770_AD.SAV

P.S. because I get bored sometimes when naming new towns on a huge map, there are some...*ahem*..."adult" names on this map. Just wanted to warn anyone who might load it and be offended. Never imagined anyone else would ever be looking at it, you know?

Okay, I confirmed it - Snoopy's terrain graphics enhancement scenario has a bug. I started another huge-map game and the cultural victory condition was 100,000 points again. Mystery solved - now I just have to cope with the fact that I wasted many, many hours playing this game...! I'll put a note in the thread for Snoopy's graphics mod.

You don't have to lose that game. Just ensure the Celts survive and the Koreans won't win. Leave them with a small city and forget about them (as long as they aren't *barely* over 1/2 of Korea's culture, Korea won't get enough culture to double them
0.

leave celts on 1 city
and attack korea but dont capture citys raze them (they have huge culture, culture flip big problem) stettle new towns on the place of the razed ones

Good ideas but unfortunately they won't work. Celts and Korea have been at war nearly the entire game, and the only reason I declared on the Celts was because Korea had finally won and was about to mop up all of the Celts resources, so I decided to grab some (particularly Uranium) while I still could. Korea's army is at least 5 times larger than mine - we went to war a while back and I was barely able to survive without losing any important cities. In fact I was proud of being able to survive at all considering that when the war started I had 25 or 30 tanks and they had 150 (and 250 Mech Infantry!). The only thing I have more of is nukes. When I took the Celts' last city, Korea was literally about to capture it the very next turn. I would have to go a few turns back and literally encircle the Celts' last cities with my army to prevent Korea getting through...

...actually, that's not a bad idea, I might try that...!
