Culturally Linked Locales

Since it is entirely obvious that I'm a cherry maybe I can get some help on this one or at least some batteries for my chem lights:

I am playing off the standard world map. I am the Chinese. For one game, I selected "Curturally Linked Start Places" and in another I de-selected "Curturally Linked Start Places" and both times I ended up near Lake Michigan. Any explanation?

If you want to start somewhere else on the map, you have 2 options (AFAIK). One: Start a new game and see where you end up. Two: Use the editor to assign the starting positions to the Civs. (Right-click on the starting position and choose reassign. Then you can set which civ strats where)

Hey! Sorry if this has already been discussed (Search function is disabled!), but what are the culture groups? I know India, China, Japan from a different thread that someone mentioned. I can make general guesses like I am assuming America and Iroquois are in the same one... Rome and Greece...

Different culture groups have different artwork for cities etc. More importantly, the AI gives civs in the same culture group as it diplomatic bonuses.

You can check exactly what civs go in which cultural group in the editior (under "Edit Civilizations"). Most a pretty obvious, but Zululand is Mid East ...
