When I go to click on a hyperlink to the civilopedia, instead of showing a hand for the cursor, it shows nothing, it clicks fine, and looks like a normal cursor when I move it away. What could be the problem? I have a PII 400MHz, 128Mb RAM, 512kb cache, 32Mb Graphics Card and Win95b. I can't install DirectX 8.1.

This is an inconvenience to me, but I would a solution

People still use Windows 95? You should upgrade to at least 98 if you can, your system can handle it.

Like CornMaster said it sounds like a missing file.

Try this: Go to your control panel, and then open up the mouse options. Go to the cursors tab of that and then choose a different cursor theme. Click apply and then okay and your cursors should reflect the theme you chose. Hopefully there will be a cursor there when you put your hand over the link.

Also... I doubt this is the case, but some websites insert coding that changes the cursor when you go over a link. So it could be the site doing that for a reason, though I doubt it in this case.

your problem stems from the fact that you use Windows 95. I am not giving you a hard time here, I am being serious.
As long as you use 95, you're going to see annoying little problems such as this one. Windows 95 has old code and dll files in it, and frankly, the rest of the world has moved on.
Example, I have some special active-X controls I load for a particular app my company designed and uses. If I load them on a Windows 95 machine that has Lotus Notes on it, the file attachment button in Lotus Notes stops working... only on Windows 95. those active X controls have nothing to do with anything lotus related. The problem lies in a Windows shared .dll somewhere....

Here is another reason to purchase a more recent operating system:

MICROSOFT NO LONGER SUPPORTS WINDOWS 95.

good luck.

Yep, a great reason to get a different version of windows would be support from Microsoft.

:p Seriously though, 95a is really bad but 95b&c are definitely better than plain 98. 98SE is good though.

As far as a possible solution to problems with the mouse cursor: Right-click on the desktop and select Display Properties from the context menu. Go to the right-most tab, Settings, and click on the button labeled Advanced. Go to the Troubleshoot tab and move hardware acceleration down 1 notch.

You may also want to select a different cursor set (control panel).

Different cursor sets don't work, it's the 'hand' (I only know because I saw it in the manual) which appears when you put your hand over the civilopedia link in Civ3.

It just disappears! No cursor, until I move it out. :(
Oh well, Win98 is a nice option, but I don't know about the speed it'd run on my PII 400MHz 128Mb RAM PC. Bit slow huh?

Win95(b) is so nice and 'whippy', whizzes around.

But.......On Win95 I can't play PTW!!!!!!!!!!!! :( :(  SO INFURIATING!!!!!!

AAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!! I can't play the sequel to my favourite strategy game!!!!! :(

Oh well, thanks guys, I'll look for some cheap Win98's. I'll be saving up for weeks for their current price!! (£50-£60)
