I am playing a Custom Game for the first time, and I noticed that as you are custom selecting your AI opponents, the default is "Noble" difficulty for the AI opponents - however, there is no option to change this difficulty...

Am I doing something wrong?, and why would there be different degrees of difficulty for each opponent?

It's because in multiplayer human players can place different handicaps on themselves that way. The singleplayer game just uses the same layout, so it shows that selection for even the AIs. Each AI is assumed to be at a certain power relative to the player's chosen difficulty.

Or so I assume!

hmmm,

has anyone else played a Custom Game (single) and noticed that you cannot change the difficulty level of the opponents?

this is in the pre-game options (i.e. before you start the game)

Yes, I played my second game as a custom game on chieftan level (first non-custom game at settler level was really easy), and I noticed that the AI opponents were greyed-out at noble level when I started. I played it through anyway, to a space race win, and honestly didn't think the AI was significantly more difficult than my first game at settler level. I'm thinking that despite appearing as "noble," the AIs may have defaulted to my "chieftan" setting.

In a custom game, you select the difficulty setting under your own name to determine the difficulty.

If you don't believe me, make a duel-sized quick game against a deity AI and find out for yourself. :)

This seems like another "bug" to me...

Why would the options be "greyed" out on noble for the AI when choosing a custom game?

If you select your difficulty setting, the AI difficulty settings should automatically follow (or you should at least have the options to change them)
