First impressions of Civ6 from a long-time fan: what is with the sardonic humour in the tech and civics quotes? The whole vibe of Civ, the hypnotic, period music, the varied landscapes and array of cultures, the relative historical accuracy, it was all designed to get you involved and appreciate the majesty of human civilization and development.

Now I discover chemistry and I get a lame quip about how methyl-ethyl-1,2-bromidediophosphate is hard to pronounce, as spoken by a wannabe Billy Connolly. Way to wreck the illusion.

Wanna be Billy Connolly = Sean Bean. Don't blame him for the texts.
I mostly dislike the modern quotes for ancient techs.

Too right. Didn't someone demonstrate that many of the quotes had clearly been found using the first page of Google results when the tech / civic was searched for?

The one I hate the most is the one about the fall of the roman empire being brought by luxuries like air conditioning

Yeah - the flippancy is really obnoxious with that one. It's not like it's hard to find a stirring, period quote on the subject of the fall of Rome, or most other historic civs for that matter.

In fact I was trying to do the opposite and come up with a worse one... I failed.

Right! So very sad to see how far this franchise has fallen. It is pretty awful how they completely and totally destroyed the majestic series with such a abhorrent thing such as tech quotes that do not speak near the level vastness of the game nor its history.

I mean to have this:
"Chemists do not usually stutter. It would be very awkward if they did, seeing that they have at times to get out such words as methylethylamylophenylium."
–Sir William Crookes

In the same breath as a series with items like this:
Civ V:"Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves." –Albert Einstein
Civ IV: "Never trust a computer you can't throw out the window."-Steve Wozniak

Apples and oranges. The last two are pretty daddish though too.
I think anyone new to the series would find Bean's quotes fairly intriguing.

We need to go back to srs bsns civ games!

I agree with this. Although i hate many of the tech quotes in Civ 6, people seem to have some unrealistic or overly-nostalgic obfuscated view of the "seriousness" of previous versions of Civ. There are so many examples, going at least as far back as the Elvis adviser from Civ 2.

Now what I do agree with is that seemingly every quote being a joke dilutes it too much. I want the tongue in cheek aspect but it's like having too much of that spice you really like in your food.

Especially when I was a younger lad, a lot of the civ4 quotes by Nimoy had this ethereal quality where it felt like the voice was reaching out of the monitor and grabbing me. It's not just his voice- the words themselves were pretty well chosen. There is that big difference in the overall tone. Even in a humorous game, you can go too far. I did like how some techs have multiple quote options, so every game isn't always the same set. That was a good addition.
