data3.cab install error

HI;
I know this was an issue with Civ 3, but i have it with Civ 4 installing.

I have two machiones, my desktop is about a 16 months old - with an ATI radeon card of course :mad: , but my laptop is only 3 months old, and a different chipset altogether.

On both machines, I get near the very end of the second CD for installation, and i get this same error. D:\data3.cab cyclic redundancy error. D is my CD-Rom drive.

I called tech support, and I was told on the phone they had a solution for this specific error.

They would e-mail it to me in 30 minutes. That was last night. No e-mail yet. I followed up with an e-mail, still no reply (yeah, I know, don't laugh too hard ).

Does anybody have the solution? If it is really out there, does anybody have it?

I've cleared out all my temp files, cache, all my windoze files are up to datre, all my drivers are up to date, I run Norton and Zone Alarm pro and a couple other spyware scanners, so I think I am *resonably protected*. Who knows anymore.

Oh yeah - the other thing that happens - once I get this data3.cab error, the installer complete removes all Cvi 4 files from my hard drive. Everything.

Dontcha just love being an unpaid beta tester?
:cry:

I get the message as well, but I was able to "fix it" by simply turning off my machine when the error message popped up. It prevented the install rollback, and I have been able to play the game for 20 hours now with no problems (for now).

I know that's not an ideal way to fix an install problem, but it seemed to work just fine :) . If support ever bother sending you that email, would you be so kind as to share it here?

Thanks!

cyclic redundancy has nothing to do with software, it means the compression on some part of the CD/DVD is unreadable for your drive. you could set the drive(some hardware manufacturs allow it) to check some extra times to see if they really can't read it, cleaning the disk with a disk cleaner helps sometimes too..or just buy a new DVD-ROM oder CD-ROM..or go back to the store and ask for a different CD/DVD, if you're sure youre hardware is ok!!! but, I used a kenwood first, got lotsof problems reading DVD's, including the CRC, i just bought a Samsung, and no problems, samsung reads all like it should :)

I gathered that. It installed on my desktop just fine. Of course, it installed on the laptop just fine, too...I just had to get around the installation rollback. I wonder what the support email will say is their solution to the problem, or if it's just a half-arsed workaround like I used?
