[Col] Decoding Colonization SAV files (1994 / Old / Classic)

Yeah I read about the "on-the-job training" causing a colonist to get a speciality, and I've seen it happen on the easy difficulty levels, but I've never once had it happen on conquistador or viceroy, so I think it's far less likely on that difficulty and you basically need the Indians to teach it.
 
The official strategy guide (p. 52-53) gives details on this. It says the four skills not available in the Old World (fur trapping, cotton planting, sugar planting, tobacco planting) can be learned on the job. The chances of it happening are 1% per turn for a Free Colonist, ½%/turn for indentured servants, and ⅓%/turn for petty criminals.
