A bit bored of normal Civ 5 games, I decided to play recklessly on Deity. The goal wasn't to win, or conquer vast swathes of land, but just to have fun. I played as Polynesia on a large earth map, with standard speed and 22 civilizations. The result was an epic battle royale, in which I defended my only city against several warring nations over thousands of years. Below, the epic tale unfolds:
I found my first city, Honolulu, in Thailand. The starting location sucks. One luxury resource, gems, zilch production, marsh, and jungle tiles. By turn fifty, I have three cities: one in Thailand, the second in Indonesia, and the third in Australia. My happiness is pretty good, but my science and happiness is abysmal. On turn sixty, I notice that the neighboring Songhai are about to backstab me. A large force of spearmen, warriors, and archers are surrounding the west side of my capital, up in eastern India. Reckless as all hell, I declare war on him before he can backstab me.
By that time, I have seven units: three spearmen, two archers, and two Maori warriors. I also have a nearby Moai improvement, which gives me a +10% attack bonus. My positioning gives me an amazing advantage, and I hold off the Songhai for about fifteen turns. Then, Siam (in China and central Asia) declares war on Askia and crushes him. His cities are swept up by his elephants, and I'm appalled by his frightening force.
Turn 80, the Greeks backstab me. My second and third cities are crushed by caravels and gunpowder technology. Boohoo, I never cared for those cities anyways. I make peace with the Greeks after a short confrontation. Thankfully, my capital is left intact. I fear what they might have done if they attacked Honolulu instead of my crappy cities.
Turn 96, the Siamese declare war on me with one of the largest forces I've ever seen. Elephants, pikemen, swordsmen, and composite bowmen all begin to swarm into Thailand. Thankfully, they are bogged down by a river and the surrounding jungle tiles. My three spearmen (now pikemen) guard the borders from an amphibious invasion. The AI was intelligent enough to attack my pikemen, with elephants, from the water. One of my three pikemen survive the onslaught. One of my Maori warriors is destroyed, too. I have four units left: two composite bowmen, one pikemen, and one swordsman. Somehow, this army managed to defend Honolulu for the next 125 turns, slaughtering literally hundreds of Siamese, Carthaginian, Greek, and Indian units. I made peace with Siam shortly before I retired from the game.
