I have a new city that is low on amenities and I can see no way to solve the problem before it causes problems with me being attacked by barbarians.

Is there a way to delete this city instead of waiting for it to start my downfall?

Not sure about delete, but you could give it away or sell it to an AI in diplomacy.

First you click on one of the faces at the top of the screen. This is self explanatory but the face you click on correlate to the civ you want to trade with. Then the screen will open up to the leader on the right and an options bar to the left. Select "Make Deal". The items on the left are yours and the items on the rights are your trade partners. You can scroll down your list to find the city you wish to give away. There is also an option where the trade partner will balance the trade in their favor. So if you hit that option, odds are that the trade partner will give you gold and resources in return for the city. I am posting some pictures just incase that helps.

Tks, Elrac. I assumed that when the popup came that I was in trouble for not having enough amenities that soon something bad would happen but as I have continued the game, nothing has happened yet. And I may be slowly digging myself out of that hole.

Being short one or two amenities isn't a big deal, your city will just grow a little slower and produce a little slower. Being short several amenities however can be a problem though
