Dell? Gateway? Someone else?

What if you want a laptop, in which case building your own would not be possible? Who would be the best choice here (and how would you buy it, i.e., direct from the company, from a third party, etc.)?

I checked newegg.com after seeing how many thought DIY computers are better. I found that it's actually about the same price as a Dell.

I understand the advantage of building my own, but with no "savings" I'm kind of scared to attempt it. Having it done for me and having a company that will stand behind it makes me think that might be the right way to go.

For reference, I could get all those parts @ newegg for around 700, but I'd still need an OS, a case, powersupply, some basic software etc, that jacks the price back up to around 1100.

With the price the same, I'm not sold on making it my self, with the limited free time I have (father, husband, bread winner) and 0 exp i have, I think dell is the fit for me.

Thanks for all the advice guys!

You really should consider building it yourself. You'll save a load, and get a far better computer for it.

Buy a Mobile Athlon XP2500+.

Ah, but you with DIY you have also an entire forum behind you. I built my first computer recently and hit 3 roadblocks after building it. I asked around on this forum and got the anwsers to my problems. "D

I always build my own, but you may want to check out alienware. They build specifically for gamers, and I've heard good things. Just make sure you get a standard form factor for your case and motherboard, like ATX. I'm not sure Dell will give you that, so upgrading can be harder (or impossible), and power and cooling may be a problem when you add new HW for the newest games.

Part of the decision for building vs. buying will be how much time you want to put into research of each component. Putting the pieces together is very simple, all you need is a small screw driver and a little patience.

As far as which company to go with, we just installed about 450 Dell desktop and some 200 laptops about two months ago...so far, so good although Dell did screw up the laptop image, or so I'm told.

I'll be back with specs on the desktops.

I'm a bit of a Dell fan (except for that blip in their manufacturing process that IbnSina notes), and dislike home-PC Compaqs. HPs have been adequate. I've also mostly built my own over the past couple years (NewEgg.com does indeed rock), but when getting them or recommending them to others Dell gets my vote.

I finally went with Dell. Ordering through the Small Busness side of their web site I was able to get what I wanted for less than $900. Would have cost me at least $200 more to make it myself, pluss all the time involved. My fingers are crossed, and I'll let you all know what I think of Dell down the road.

Thanks again for all your imput, you all helped me make the decision!

You said in your other thread that you wanted a gaming pc. You are highly unlikely to have got that from Dell's small business section.

However, if you are happy with your purchase then that is all that really matters.

The Specs you are looking for are excellent, but if you want to play games you don't have to look for PCI graphics, but for certain chipsets..

X600, Radeon9800pro, X800, FX6800 or FX6600 will be perfect to play games for a while.
