Here's the situation:

We're exploring, hoping for contact, and have 17 gold.
Dellham is a long march from our main population center.
The Whale and River can easily support a larger population.

In 3 turns, we can have a Warrior, a happiness guard.
In 8 turns, it could be a Phalanx.
Or we could spend gold to accelerate the Phalanx.
In 7 turns, we'll need something to control happiness.

In about 15 turns, we can have a Settler.

Phalanx w/the accelaration. Given Dellham's relatively remote
location, we need a real defense capability as well as happiness.
Then we can start cranking out settlers, as Delham's relatively
remote location will also facilitate building up the section due north of RC, and/or (depending on what the Legions discover) W+NW of Dellham.

I think it's wise to let the legions pop the hut that should be somewhere in between them and then let 1 legion defend Dellham and the other legion explore. We should switch to phalanx because we want to keep the city so it's only normal to defend it properly! After phalanx start pumping out the settlers and settle the northern part of our continent.

Phalanx with the least amount of rush building and then settlers as we need the legion for exploration.

I guess the phalanx isn't too expensive...

But wouldn't a warrior also be a deterrent for the AI just marching in? I know that its defence is poor, but often the AI will walk into an unoccupied city, and hold off an occupied one.

We can also get the legion to the hut and back in around 4 or 5 turns, and if it pops a chariot / horseman, then I'd sooner have the fast unit for exploration. This will also add another unit on to the support costs for dellham - which may mean we want to abandon producing a unit and go for a settler instead.

In short - pop the hut before rushing the phalanx. We can do that before the warrior is finished, me thinks. :)

If we were to meet another civ and wanted to attack quickly then we need both legions though and a phalanx would be useful for quite awhile, especially since we don't know when the AI might appear.

Right now, Dellham has built 4 shields. Two turns is ideal. At that moment, Dellham will have built 8, it's the time to IPRB the Warrior for $4, and complete the Phalanx in 7 turns, on time. So it all seems to me.

Ainwood, I think the Phx is a useful alternative to a Warrior, the city has no defense bonus. It's the Settler you're anguishing about, right? Free Legions, or a quick Settler? A dilemma.

Yep. :D

Exploration with the legions is going to be slow, so it would be great if we could get a fast unit from the hut. If we don't, then why don't we just use the legion to defend the city, and start a settler (maybe rush it). We could always build the warrior, and use that for exploration in place of the legion.:)

Our General, let's think WAR. Wouldn't you rather be exploring with 2 Legions when you chance upon a new hapless AI city? However, I'm happiest with the domestic view. We understand that the mightiest military comes from a large populous productive territory. ... The Warrior explorer is a fresh idea, I'll have to think about that. btw, I'll be gone Saturday.
