When you demand tribute, does it cause the civ from which you are demanding the tribute to dislike you more ?

The extra money from the tribute makes the game easier, but does anyone feel or know if demanding the tribute makes a sneak attack more likely in later turns ?

Does anyone, (maybe the multi players), know what message is shown to the opposing player when you demand tribute ?

If the only message is along the lines of the

" Pay us 100 Gold & we will not crush your civ like a paper cup "

then demanding tribute may not be appropriate for the moof peaceful/defensive style of play.

Yes. The civ that you're demanding tribute to dislike you, much more

The civ that you demmand tribute to gets more angry against you, so any kind of attack is much more probably

In multiplayer game the diplomacy is quite different, with some options unique to this kind of game. If you have a multiplayer version (MGE or TOT), start a game with a buddy an check it out

In Civ MGE, AI is much more aggresive, so there is not much difference between asking for tribute and don't asking for. I'm a peaceful player, but I find very usefull to ask for tribute, because is a good way to obtain benefits from a superior position.

In MGE at diety level, you might as well as for tribute. The AI hates you anyway, and WILL attack you the first chance it gets, so unless your civ is in a pitiable position, go for the gold.

The only time I will avoid asking, or maybe even pay tribute, is if I am fully engaged in a war with one civ and an agressive one, like the greeks for example, contacts me on my unengaged side and gets nasty. Than its better to delay, finish off the first war, than turn on the nasty one with all your forces. Avoid a two front war as long as possible, unless you are a superpower and can deal with all of them at once.

Each time you ask for tribute there is a chance that the AI's current attitude will decrease by one, depending on things like relative power and probably some random function. Often you can get away with the trick of gifting the AI a tech, which increases their attitude, and then asking for tribute, ending up back the same as before. Often the first demand or two is rebuffed, especially if you and the AI are relatively equal in "status" (number of cities, number of units, gold, techs, whatever). But if you have a leg up on them they will usually start paying.

One thing to note about tribute is that they tend to pay around half of their treasury, but they get stingy below 50g. So if they are between 51 and 99 you'll probably get 25g, between 100 and 149 you'll get 50g, etc.

Also, tribute does not work in Republic or Democracy.

if you actually need to demand tribute, dont. what i am saying is if you need the money that bad, you probbably cant stand up to a counterattack.
