Okay. I completely reinstalled vista on my pc, and civ v now works. That is more or less. When i try to set up a game, it always crashes. A box in windows tells me it is because of DEP. DATA EXECUTION PREVENTION

i can add civV to the list of exceptions but for that i need to find the .exe file. Where is it? I can't find it in the directory.

Thanks.

It's here on my system: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization v. The path names might be slightly different on Vista, or a lot different if you installed from a disc.

when, i click the file, it says that
"this program (civ v) has to be executed with DEP. You can not turn off dep for this program"

Why wont windows allow me to run the programs i want to. It is my computer, no?

You do have steam loaded? That is where the file is.

i have installed it via cd rom but i run it via steam. I clicked the file in the c:/program files/steam directory.

After Googling, I found one or two other players with DEP crashing Civ 5, with no way to turn DEP off for the exe file. It seems that Civ 5 is hardcoded to require DEP. However, I feel this is a red herring. Some issue with the game is causing Windows to invoke DEP. Let's go back to troubleshooting 101: Use Steam to verify the integrity of your game cache and see what happens. (Steam --> Library --> Games --> Right-click on Civ 5 --> Properties --> Local Files --> Verify integrity of Game Cache)

This problem, which I am now having, seems to have grown more difficult. My system (Vista 64-bit Gateway) won't run Civ5 without DEP - it claims that the program requires it. I verified the integrity of the game cache and that didn't help. I'd appreciate any help.

How many times did you verify? It should eventually say all files succesfully varified. I would still do it a couple more times to make sure even after that.

I put steam and Civ5 on a jump drive: 8Gig or 16Gig. If you like keeping a lot of saved games, you can save them here also. It seems that windows does not move these files in optimizing like it does a regular hard drive. I have found that less files are corrupted by doing this. If your game keeps freezing, there is a greater possibilty that other files can become corrupted also. If you have a lot of steam games, this may not work although they have 32 and 64 Gig available also. Even after playing the game and reloading a couple of times, I have to reboot the computer, to "reset" memory due to poor coding that tends to corrupt RAM leading to corrupted files.
