I am playing as a single player with multiple AI players.

I have seen some events similar to "X has declared vassldom"

How do I determine who is a vassal of whom ? This is not shown by my diplomatic advisor,

Yes it is; the color of the line connecting the different civilization leaders shows the relationship. If I recall correctly, white is contact, green is open borders, red is war, blue is defensive pact, and cyan is vassal/master.

You also cannot declare war on a vassal directly--you declare war on the master, and automatically declare on all its vassals.

The master/vassal relationship is also shown on the main screen (I think with or without BUG) as the vassal civ name being indented under the master's name.

Only with BUG. Another reason why this game is quite unplayable without it.

Thanks for your replies, Lennier

the diplomatic advisor has key to the lines
the colour cyan and its entry is absent, the contact line shows as grey on my monitor

There's no indentation in player list at BR, but there are symbols by the three players who I believe are vassals; they have two extra symbols, which contain numbers, most significantly -` 'you declared war on our friend'. I am not at war with the vassals and some will trade with me. Sorry, I id not notice these before

What's BUG ? I'm playing CIV4, not the add-ons, expansions or other derived games

All players' names are under the (suspected) master, because the master has highest score

Sorry, no screenshots yet.

I guess that many die-hard players will automatically assume that if you are posting in these forums, you are already playing with BTS+BUG. The most common comment here is: "Spare no expenses and get yourself the Beyond the Sword expansion. You are missing out if playing the vanilla game only. Go straight to the mod thread and download some mod that includes BUG!!!"

Would you be wrong if you're saying "No, I first want to experience the vanilla game and work my way up?" Frankly: yes. When they say that the gameplay is vastly improved, it's not kidding. I was also skeptical at first but I came around quickly.

[Edit: On topic]: From what you describe, I don't think they are actually vassals. Save the game and declare war on them. If you are able to do that, they are not really vassals. Also, I'm not sure about the vanilla game, but in BtS at least, no vassals before Feudalism.

Since you play the base game nobody is a vassal to anyone. Vassals is a feature from the expansions and not included in the base game.

The message you are reading is that the Civ in question is revolting to the civic Vassalage which is one of the labor civics.

The "You have declared war on our friend" is something you get when you declare war on a civ that the civ in question is pleased or friendly towards.

In the relations screen in the diplo advisor you can click on each leader and see what they think about the other leaders (and what they think about you).

Windsor has explained what was happening very clearly (thank you Windsor).I checked the Civics screen and under legal (maybe it was labor ?), I found vassalage.
