Did anyone ever get the Ironworks small wonder?

I always play on fully expanded maps and even with the appearance rates for iron and coal turned to the max - they are not exactly rare materials afterall - you still only get one coal/iron per 20-25 cities (or more if you build close). That makes the probability of getting both in the same city radius pretty small. I have built it exactly once and would disband a newish city or 2 if it meant being able to build it, but not a core city because as wonderful as it is, the lost investment and opportunity costs would be huge in disbanding a core city.

Hey hey...this topic has given me something to go try. With my luck, though, there won't be any strategic resources on my half of the continent! I'm curious, which conditions for maps give the most resources? This would be an interesting find...

I nearly always get resources on a wet, raging pangaea on a standard, but crowded, map. I nearly always get resources on other maps, too. Everything is due to the initial expansion. If you get 20%-50% more than your share of the land, then you have a much greater chance of having resources when you need them, and they have a less chance. Populate every available niche.

I'm playing a game with the Germans, and when I got steam engine I could see a coal near an Iron source, but the city I put there was just one hex to far right so I had to raze it and build on the right spot, and It's just 4 tiles from my forbidden palace!
And I just got a Great Leader to hurry a palace on an other continent. now it's just build up the German Empire and wait for panzers so I can rule the world!

I have managed to build the thing twice. In my current game, I had the most annoying piece of bad luck. My Forbidden Palace city had Iron in its radius, and the Iron source ran out just before I discovered Steam Power. Then I got Steam Power and, wouldn't ya know, Coal was discovered within the radius of my Forbidden Palace city!

I know they keep saying that disappearance of resources is completely random, but incidents like that make me wonder whether the game is out to get me. On the other hand, someone else said he had Coal pop up right next to his capital and let him build the Iron Works, so I guess it could go both ways.

Yes, I've gotten it before. Not often though. Maybe 10% of my games (rough guesstimate). I have built a city twice in order to get it. One of those times required disbanding an established city.

How do you disband an established city? I need to get rid of some of my pop 1 cities since I have too many cities and they just won't starve to death and refuse to build that last worker! (These were cities that came to me thro cultural switch)

Also, would this mean we can disband a recently captured city, thus effectively razing it without the negative opinion drawback?

Set food to zero growth, and build a worker (or settler if size two).

Never thought about it much but just got it in my current game for the first time after about six games. Could not find the city for a while after I got the message. Just went through all the city build option screens till it came up in Detroit (appropriately).
Detroit was already one of my biggest cites right next to the one that already had the Forbidden Palace, it has hills; mountains and lots of grassland Yippee. I also have Sun Tzu's so it turns out a vet modern armour every turn (157 sheilds pop 18). Must be the most productive city in this world and it hasn't even got a manufacturing plant yet.
Will definitely build a new city for it in future games if I can.

Just after reading this post and thinking to myself I wish I had the opportunity to build the Ironworks small wonder one time in the many games I've played, well the night before last I got my wish.

Happily Jez.

I generally get the ironworks, but it is often in a conquered city, which is a bit strange.

Edit: on second thought, maybe it is not so strange. I usually settle far less land than I conquer.

I finally got it on Marla Singer's World Map. I'm playing the Germans and I built a city in northern Italy, just south of the Alps. Its size 15 right now and I'm getting 125 shields/turn with Ironworks, factory and a hydro plant. And this is before most of the squares have been railroaded.

The night after I posted my 1st response on this thread I got it!
It took me a while to find the city in which I could build it, and that was a little frustrating, but once it was built, it really helped my defenses. I thought my game was broken, that had to be the 200th game I've played and never seen it before.
