Got a bad disk in the first copy I bought. After I exchanged them it installed with no problem unless you count the fact that the discs were mislabled. Frustrating slowdown on late game big maps before patch, after not so bad. Movies seemed fine before patch, a little glitchy sometimes now.

Can you chop your answers down to 50 characters or less? :)

Hehehe I think you took the criticism a little bit too much to heart...I didnt exactly mean to say your poll was bad, although I must admit I do deserve the "do it better then!" retort. =)

So, heres the help you asked for.

1. The game worked perfect for me, havent noticed any problems pre or post patch. People and their crazy mods, none for me thanks! I know its you people and your crapy computers anyway!

2. The game worked fine, the patch helped but it wasnt absolutely neccessary. The bugs present are too minor to even mention. Dont want mod, dont need mods. Buy some RAM for goodness sake!

3. The game worked horribly (problems installing, or had occasional CTD's, or graphical errors/lag were horrible, memory problems late game, etc...) , but it works great now, the patch helped and it was noticable improvement. No real noticable bugs to mention anymore. Maybe a mod or two down the road if neccessary but no go yet. Glad Im not some of ya, phew!

4. The game worked horribly (problems installing, or had occasional CTD's, or graphical errors/lag were horrible) , but it works ok now, the patch helped some and we can call it improvement. There are still some issues that need to be fixed. Looking at the mods/fixes as we speak. /sigh

5. The game didnt work (couldnt install, or had CTD's all the time, graphical glitches, or had harsh memory problems that made my computer its punk B you know what), but it works fine now, the patch helped with noticable improvement. There are still some minor bugs (small graphical errors, rare CTD, etc) but I can live with em. Only reason I havent mod'ed is Im scared of the internet!

6. The game didnt work (couldnt install, or had CTD's all the time, or had harsh graphical problems that made my computer its punk B you know what), but it works ok now, the patch helped if you can call it that. There are still some very major bugs (graphical errors, frequent CTD's, harsh memory problems late game etc) but Im willing to stick it out to the next patch kinda thing. The only thing preventing me from moding or fixing it myself is the next patch.

7. The game worked great, the patch helped but wasnt needed, the mods/fixes I got rocked but were in no way neccessary, and I want to have Sid's babies!

8. The game worked fine, the patch helped alot, the mods/fixes were a needed improvement, Civ IV is awesome!

9. The game worked ok, the patch may or may not have helped, the mods/fixes were what made the difference though, I want to have Harkonens babies!

10. The game sucked, the patch made it bearable (barely playable that is), the mods/fixes made it playable (still some problems), but Civ IV is ok fun!

11. The game really sucked, the patch did what?, the mods/fixes at least let me see how the Hanging Gardens were built at 1 fps, and now I only have a 1 and a half minute wait after leaving the game before my computer tells me its ok to surf the web again or finish my game of solitare. Im thinking about making a "Civ IV sucks!" collage on my wall with the cardboard game box and manual.

12. The game problems sucked hard, after finally being able to download the patch I cant see the difference, the mods/fixes did little to nothing, it may be something on my end (machine or otherwise) but Im within specs and Im now pulling my hair out, please help BEFORE I need counseling.

13. The game was intollerable, but the patch OR a mod/fix already listed fixed me up perfect. Now I can play thank you very much! Muahahahaha!

14. The game problems sucked hard AFTER I downloaded the patches or mod/fixed it....WTH??? Reinstalling now! Now I know why people dont trust the internet!

15. Not only does it not work right, but I found the explanation for whats wrong and its Civ's fault. This game makes stale ritz crackers with moldy cheese taste good! Thanks for nothing Sid!

16. Cant generate an opinion because I havent yet determined the problem but Im pretty sure its Civs problem.

17. Cant generate and opinion because I havent yet determined the problem but Im pretty sure its on my end.

18. I have absolutely no clue what the problem is and its amazing my education level got me this far in this poll.

19. Ooooh look, mash button!!

This will give you a nice sample, help to weed out some of the idiots who mess around, and be a little bit more representative of the good things or problem areas.

Its not perfect but IMO its a bit more rounded. Again I stress polls such as these are only representative of web fanatics, troll lurkers, and people who actually are here to solve problems.

*Edit* Thanks to those below for some of the changes and additions to the poll idea. Kudos to yall!

Still holding at 52% out of the box trouble free......

Maybe if we all go buy a second copy Take2 can afford to do better :).

Pat

How accurate can it be, though, on a fan site that isn't visited by the people who already returned it, or sold it on ebay, because it didn't work? :p

Or like me, who didn't even vote because the poll didn't have the appropriiate choice...

Oggums...list your appropriate choice and I will find you a number or change the poll if neccessary. =)

Patweb, working on it. :D

According to this one, as it is now, it's only 1 in 42 people that are having a critical issue with the game!

The wording of the poll means that you may have had critical issues, but they may be resolved now. So in my case, I voted some crashing issues, but playable now. I used the INI file changes to get it to work. Before these changes, the issues _were_ critical - I couldn't play more than 3-4 turns or less without CTD or worse.

I think 48% of people not having a game work out of the box is what you should be looking at, and shuddering. To have half your customers have problems is very worrying... and I would be guessing that most have fixed the problems through suggestions here, not through official patches (though upcoming patches may changes this).

Patweb...

Found a solution but its a workaround of sorts...

Post the poll as is or with anything you think worthy of change, and put a note at the bottom to post a number or the number closest to your position with an explanation. Then immediately post right after so you have the 2nd post and put in *reserved for results*

Then in the 2nd post put in a list like...

1. 4 votes.....6%
2. 8 votes.....12%
3. 24 votes.....36%

etc...

Its not flashy like the bar poll but it works. It does take a little looking after though. If you did want to do the 50 character thing I think you could but you would take all the flavor out of the poll hehehe. Personally I think you might get some interesting results looking at the numbers people choose and any comments they have. Up to you though.

Natron...which is what I think Pat was looking for. What people experienced out of the box at first, and then how the patch, or mods/fixes, or both affected them. At least that was my interpretation of what Pat was looking for. =)

Yeah I know thanks MadMaligor, it was more directed at Efexeye who seemed to be suggesting only 1/42 had problems... whereas 50% have had problems, but most have been able to get the game going via workarounds for the moment, or maybe by the 1.09 patch.
50% out of the box is amazingly high. Imagine if 50% of cars "mostly" worked, just the brakes didn't go sometimes....
Luckily a patch is cheaper than a recall... but you still annoy the customers.

Yep, when I originally posted (the poll timed out before I got all the options in, you have 10 minutes), I had 'your problem was fixed by Take2' and 'your problem was fixed by CIVFANATICS'. Now wouldn't that be a doozy?

If forgot to put them in :).

Remember that at LEAST 50% of the people that bought the game have little or no experience, or inclination, to mess with their computer drivers and configuration to get a stupid game to work no matter how desperate they are. A lot of people will mess up their computer in this attempt beyond their ability to fix it.

10 years ago, my kid got the Sony Playstation. He was like 5-6. He says, Dad, how come my games don't crash like they do on the computer?

Well, I think MICROSOFT will fix that inequity with the XBOX 360!

Ahh gotcha...although I do believe the 50% number is skewed. Im more inclined to think we are all in the 10-15% range somewhere (very rough guess). Quoted numbers on the internet are like pop rocks. Counting them going off in your head is a virtual impossibility.

I haven't had a single problem with the game except that my friends don't have it yet so I can't play it with them.

i am really surprised that the positive % is above 50%, myself... i say that because i have no real idea why normal ppl with no problems whatsoever would waste their time reading forums about the game. notice i said 'normal' before someone asks me what i am doing here... :D

My option wasn't on the poll: Game did not start up.

Just that. No wierd graphics issues. No crashes of any kind. Game installed just fine. There would just be the CivIV.exe quietly humming in the background and that was it.

This was resolved.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=140474

This thread had a couple of good suggestions and also links to another thread which had the suggestion that fixed mine. There are quite a few game-won't-start threads (I had to cull through the Bug Forum to find this thread again since search is disabled). Maybe this bug ought to be added to the sticky in there.

My particular issue was that I needed the latest drivers for my ATI card, but the drivers are designed not to install on some laptop systems for whatever reason. There is a small hack that disables this check and allows the driver to install. When I did this, not only did Civ IV start running, but I also noticed that a couple of other games that are graphics intensive ran just a bit smoother and definitely looked better.

Game did not start up? Then you're obviously option #6

I got it working though. So my option isn't up on the poll.

Since I've gotten the game actually running, it's been smooth with no issues except when a victory happens on a huge map, it seems to take forever to calculate the score. Also, Civ IV.exe takes about 3 minutes to shut down, but does so quietly in the background and I can still run other programs although they might be a bit choppy until it's completely gone. I wouldn't have even noticed this if I hadn't been looking. No graphics issues, no memory problems, no wierd pauses. My wonder movies stutter, but I'm somehow confident that will be fixed in the next patch.
