Did I just get a new patch installed?

I just turned my computer on and Steam updated. I clicked on Civ 6 and a picture came up of various Civ related things and a loading bar appeared. This seemed to be installing a new update and then it started the game.

Now, I already have the March update installed - I am playing Portugal for the second time (great civ!) So what was the update? Was it the April one early or what? Any way of checking this? Whatever was uploaded seemed to take a little while.

My 2K Launcher just updated and looks completely different. It's much bigger than it used to be.

Yeah there's a new launcher, and I hate it already. If it doesn't take longer to load, it at least feels like it. Plus you have to keep it open in the background as a separate window while Civ 6 is running, which just makes it take longer for me to alt-tab over to the right program, and makes that screen look cluttered. It also might impact performance somewhat for some people, maybe. It's not impacting my performance but I use a gaming laptop so maybe that's why.

The first time I started up the game after this "update" it crashed before getting to the main menu, so that tells you just about what you need to know about it I think.

I was able to start a game eventually (after verifying integrity of files on Steam), so it seems like an annoyance at worst and does not break anything.

For anyone having trouble with the launcher, you can bypass it entirely. In your Steam library, right-click on Civilization VI and go to "Properties". Under Launch Options, put something like this (with the quotation marks):

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization VI\Base\Binaries\Win64Steam\CivilizationVI_DX12.exe" %command%

You'll have to figure out where your game is installed, though.

Yeah I extremely dislike new launcher. Anyone know why when I open the new launcher and start a game it’s only recognizing the base game?

it’s like I have no expansions or anything. I can’t figure out how to fix it.

Yeah the base game thing worried me but I am now continuing with my Portugal game no problems.

Whoever thought it was a good idea to update the 2K Launcher - no, it wasn't!

And this is funny how companies works. So much money and effort to "improve" launcher that no one cares about or worse: hate it. Fix game braking errors? Nah, new launcher is what we need.

Firaxis has got nothing to do with the launcher, it is done by 2K Games, the publisher of Firaxis' games.

Nothing worth in those regular updates to their silly 2K Launcher -- every time around.
It's a buggy marketing stunt.. doesn't really offer satisfactory or useful features.. spams us with absurd pub references.. **ENFORCES** us into a gimmicky system -- name your poison.

This process initially started when Firaxis released XCom:ChimeraSquad which i immediately blocked as a Data-Miner trick through my AV (Panda) settings. Soon after, the entire library of 2K Titles triggered their own special Launcher while even combining anything into a global structure -- again, enforced many times over in a wacky loop.

Luckily, @Aristos gave us Civ-Fans a hacky solution (already mentioned above) that works just fine.

Yep.. but as you know, unfortunate brother Aristos had way too many other weird ideas of his own ...

So they incorporated his DiplomacyRibbons into the game and turned him silent, ahem, helped him to find the Light. Deep inside.

Glad to see the hack still works, sad to see the launcher is even more stupid now. Not surprised though.

I got that update and verified my game file integrity but the thing still won't launch. Even trying to run it from my Steam library, it just says "running" for like two seconds and then goes back to "play."
I just wanted to play Civ 6 today!

Apply the bypass to the stupid launcher linked above. It still works.
