I am still trying for my first diety win. Do you research anything yourself in the AA or do you try to buy/demand for peace all your techs?

Things I learned last game were to give tribute when asked in early game (which I didn't do), build lots of catapults (which I did get right), build walls on outer cities (didn't do), and pray (probably didn't do enough).

I have been reading tR1cKy's posting and it has been most imformative, but I am still looking for the other little hints that I am missing.

Another question is when should the city improvements be built if at all? Do you build any temples early or wait until your military is strong?

Thanks for any of your insights.

For your first game play as the byzantines on an archipalego map, never give in to tribute if they unload ard them with your lethal dromon ard. Beeline for philosophy and the free advance and take either a gov if you can or construction. when you get to the MA your free advance is awesome because it gives you a nice head start minimize science and buy one tech from a civ that nobody has and sell it for like 3 more, then get the ToE tin the IA and get the atomic thoery and elcttronics then do what ever you want but that is my basic plan

How hard is it to simply build a bigger Civ on diety level, and keep up with everybody else by having more cities? I've done it on Emperor.

Most can on emperor, however, deity is a totally different beast.
The difference between monarch and emperor is small compared to the difference between emperor and deity for example.

See if you can get a finished deity game and just watch the replay, each time I do, I'm amazed I was actually able to win that game.
It can be a humbling experience. ;)

Don't build temples at all, unless you are religious civ and or aim at cultural victory. City improvements depends always in the situation. Good guideline is to build those improvements that are cheap to you and those that you really need(couple of granaries, barracks, marketplaces...) in the particular city. But in the early game you should concentrate more on units than city improvements, except some (1-2) granaries and barracks. As what comes to research, I personally do selfresearch in deity. BUT I research those tech that AI don't research as much and I always have some goal(to be first at philosophy, writing etc.). I either research at 10% or maximum that I can afford (80-100%) depending on the situation (how I stand comparing to AI civs). This approach works for me, I win roughly 70-80% of my deity games.

When "learning" to win deity, do as follows:

1. restart until you have a starting position with food bonus
2. get a settler factory up and running
3. use the luxury slider; don't create clowns or specialists
4. send out exploring units to make contacts with far away civs
5. research pottery full speed (for granary)
6. don't even try to build AA Wonder
7. mm your first 10 cities
8. give in to AI demands
9. build a lot of workers

This way , you will not fall back too far in both size and tech, if you trade successful.

Hi!

First, thanx for the feedback. I'm glad that some people have found in my game log not only an entertaining story but also a sort of strategic manual on how to perform on max difficulty levels. I suggest you to continue following it. I have played 2 more turns but didn't update the log yet (i'll do it this evening). You probably will find a few more useful hints on the upcoming events.

Now, believe me or not, this is only the sixth deity game i've been played so far, not counting the few times i restarted immediately because of bad starts. In the first i lose culturally. In the second i've been utterly crushed. In the third, another cultural defeat. In the fourth, victory by space race. Fifth, won by domination. The sixth, well you know.

You ask how to deal with the initial tech race. You are probably wondering why the AS always seems to surge away in techs so fast at the beginning. Well, there is no discount on research involved. The reason is only the set bonuses given to them. They benefits of an extra settler, 2 extra workers and a whole bunch of military units.

The extra settler and workers allow the AS to found a very early 2nd settlement and to road tiles faster. And this means more gold available to be poured into research. With the free units, in most cases they manage to grab all the goody huts available before you have a chance to see them, and some of them contains techs. Then, they meet each other almost immediately, supposing they have a way to meet, so they can trade their starting techs each other. In deity and above, the AS trade between them like crazy with a surprising price-happy attitude. They form a sort of "discount club" in which you are not included. That's why you are robbed to death everytime you try to strike a deal with those bastards.

What to do then? You've already received good advice, but everything depends from the situation you're on, the civ you choose and even the version you're playing. I suspect that most of people here play Conquests. If you're using Vanilla or PTW, the rush from (Alphabet) Writing to Republic is less effective, since Philosophy don't award you with a free tech if you're the first to discover it.

The max research on Pottery may be a good option if you are producing some gold, but it may reveal itself a tremendous waste if, for example, you meet a civ that have Pottery as a starting tech when you're short 1 turn to finish researching it...

If you know Alphabet from the start, researching Writing at minimum is usually the best option. Writing is not known by anyone and you have good chances to be the 1st to discover it (and this means good trades). Then you may go for Literature, with the intention to build the Great Library (but you need masonry early to prebuild with the Palace) or simply because it's a tech that the AS tend to overlook (more good trades).

Another possible path to follow is the rush to Monarchy. If you know from the start warrior code of ceremonial burial, and if you're the Aztecs you know both, you can try max research on Mysticism, then go for Polytheism and finally grab Monarchy.

In definitive, there is no "best" option everywhere and everytime. Judge alone and figure out things by yourself whenever you can, but don't forget that in these forums you'll find tons of good advice for any situation. Good luck!
