YNCS: I neglected to state as I did with the spelling of 'Pangaea' that you were meant to give the answer without looking up reference material. I assume you don't have the dictionary entry memorized :-p

"Pangaea" has an extra a?? I never knew that...I always put down "Pangea"

I think my favorite commonly misspelled word is the "alternative interogatory" - witch or wich. As in "wich shirt should I wear with these pants?" or "Witch Civ is your favorite?"
This one - and a lot of others - seem to be common with those of us young enough to have grown up with internet chats and IM's.

I think its which as is "which shirt" and "the witch cursed you"

and if you can spell interogatory you are doing pretty well...

It took me ages to realise how to spell and pronounce deity (day-ity, is it?)

The game does spell it Pangaea, and that seems to have recently become the most popular spelling in print too.

But both spellings are in my dictionary, and as recently as the early 90s when I was starting to take geology classes, Pangea was still the more common spelling in the US. I learned it that way, actually, and only switched to the the "pangaea" spelling because it seemed stuffy and foreign, and I was into the whole being-a-pompous-ass thing at the time.

As to the etymology, the people who spell it Pangea tend to claim pan + geos, the people who go for Pangaea tend to claim pan + Gaia. YNCS's dictionary seems to be the first to mix and match that I have run across.

de-ity : ancient pagan god of de ity-bitty

Heh, I've always hated spelling. I decided in 1st grade that I was better off waiting for spell checkers (my teacher didn't like hearing that, I can tell you), and that was around 1974.

One I often see here at CFC is 'teh' instead of 'the' ;)

I too follow the anarchist earth-pig spelling of 'pangea' over 'pangaea'.

As for diety vs. deity, I am sure I have spelled it both ways at times. I am just more used to typing 'ie' than 'ei'. Is that so wrong?

Okay, since I'm still a beginner at Civ...

The "i before e..." rule doesn't apply to deity (or diet) because the i and e are not in the same syllable.

SYLLABICATION: de·i·ty

Apparently, it does apply to siege.

I am such a nerd! :mutant:

As this discussion tends to encroach other civ3 terms:
I have a weird habit of typing "Archipelango" for the island thing.

That´s strange, I have no such typing problems and I´m no native English speaker :-)

Sparkle, that's not casual at all... you (as me) spend so much time learning how to spell correctly each word...

The problem comes when Pagaea is written "Pangea" in your language.

Spanish is closer to Latin than English is, so it's easier for me to spell correctly all these terms.

Deity --- Deidad
Pangaea --- Pangea
Archipielago --- Archipielago
Errare humanun est --- Errar es humano

And if you can spell interrogatory you are doing even better.

Did a search for 'capitol' and got 2578 hits. Don't know why, but that one really annoys me. (Must take more pills...)

:o OOPS!
Capitol/capital bothers me, too - mainly because I can never remember which is which. Principle/principal likewise.
I won the school spelling bee when I was in 7th grade and proceeded to the quarter-final round of the city competition (30 schools). It's been all downhill since then and now I have to stop to think how to spell my own name.

The way I remember those is:

The "o" in capitol goes with the "o" in dome. As in the Capitol Dome - therefore the building Congress meets in. Virtually all other spellings should be capital.

The Principal of your school should be your "pal". ( -- I know). Nearly all other occurances are principle.

You don't dip into the dictionary for a little light reading? Of course I have the whole thing memorized. And if you believe that, I have some oceanfront property near Ayres Rock you might be interested in buying. :groucho:

'i' before 'e' except after 'c' or when it sounds like 'weigh.'

The rule only applies to digraphs, so words like "deity" and "science" don't count.
The rule "i before e except after c" should be extended to include "except when said 'ay' as in 'neighbor' and 'weigh'".
The rule only applies to digraphs that have the /i:/ ('ee') pronunciation, as in 'piece'. (Note the conflict between this and the previous item.)
The rule doesn't apply to words that are recent imports from foreign languages, such as "gneiss", "dreidel", and "enceinte".
The rule doesn't apply to the large number of plurals of words ending in "cy" ("fallacies", "frequencies", "vacancies", ... ) because in the UK – in traditional RP – "cies" is pronounced with the "i" of "pin", even though it is pronounced with the "ee" of "feed" by most World-English speakers and by younger UK speakers.

The funny thing is that in the first release of Civ3 (version 1.04f, I believe) even Firaxis made the deity spelling error in the HOF screen! :D

If we're gonna discuss spelling, what about all you Americans who corrupt the beloved English language by missing out all the letter 'u' s. :o :p I mean, what's "color"? It's colour. And as for your neighbors...maybe you should watch neighbours. And I'm not even gonna start on "gaol"....:crazyeye: :D

Please don't get into that...

Remember that for dessert, you always want seconds, and the other way is desert for desert.
