This is strategy, but admittedly very opinionated strategy, hopefully it will garner some heated debate.

IMHO, the best civs suited for each of the victory conditions:

Domination: (control 66% of the lands surface)
Very hard with the current corruption model but my vote has got to do that comercial and industrious civ we all love to have next door, France.

Diplomatic Victory:
This is perhaps relys more on your neighbours that anyone else. I have only lost by this method, due to a fatal mistake not to build to the UN. My vote: Abstain

Cultural Victory:
A no brainer, the Babs have this one all the way with thier super combo of religious and scientific.

Space Victory:
lots of production and science needed, the immortals are a nice bonus for early expansion. The Persians got it made here

Conquest Victory:
Very Early conquest: Egyptians
Middle Age conquest: Japan
Industrial conquest: Germany

Depending on the amount of room on a map pick you weapon of choice for you students of Sun Tze.

Hiostographic Victory:
Population and land area are a must, strong expansionist and miltaristic civs get a bonus here. The histographic champ:
Shaka and his Zulus.

Comments are welcome. Debate necessary. This is the essence of freedom.

Some good thoughts there, Sentinali.

I agree with you about the UN - I always turn that off now after getting screwed the same way a couple of times. The first time, I actually built it myself and said yes to the vote because I wanted to see how it worked and everyone voted against me and the game was over.

For the early Conquest Victory, though, I'd have to pick the Iroquois over the Egyptians. Mounted Warriors can beat War Chariots any day of the week.

From personal experience, I would have to agree with just about all of the selections. The only exception in my games is that China always seems to finish the space ship first - without fail.
It really is odd, now that I think about it.

I laugh in recollection of doing the same thing petey mentioned. After foolishly allowing a vote and losing it, I turned that UN option off. Recently, though, I have returned it.
It makes for a little bit more of a challange, attempting to beat out the AI in building the UN...and then refusing to hold elections.

I have to disagree with the Iroquis, thier good, but the Egyptians rock due to the industrial bonus (killer in early game) and the low prices early "horseman". You will lose more war chariots, BUT, you can produce way more, at a faster pace, and early. I really had a tough time with this vote the three civs, Persia, Egypt, and Iroqouis all rock early on. The differnce is that production bonus and the fact that both P and I need a second level advance.

Just my opinion.
