im just wondering what difficulty people regularly play at ive been playing on noble but sometimes i win and sometimes i lose

depends on how good you are.....go to the next lvl and see if you can win some games.

Prince I can beat most of the time
Having a lot of trouble on monarch though....
Problem is I rarely use slavery, so I'm stuck on prince. Fine by me.

EDIT : why don't you make a poll ?

Monarch has been challenging me for a long time. Right now I am trying to get consistent victories on Monarch without saving at all and even when I get poor starts. I am also making sure I can get all the different victory types.

If it weren't for the way the AI civs trade technology in an extremely cheaty way, I'd have moved on long ago. Pretty much every strategy modification I have made in the last six months were methods to reduce the AI civ's tech trading (amongst themselves).

I think first "true level" is prince. Below that you simply cannot lose. I'm not a good player, actually I suck and I wish I'd know more about mechanics of things, and I still don't know how to lose with low difficulty levels.

Some time ago I got the spot that I won almost every prince level games. Than I switch to monarch and that didn't work at all. Than I started again with prince and I have been trying to develop my game.. with poor results. Now it seems that I cannot win on prince level either. But still I feel that it's better for me to try learn more and keep pushing with different kind of strategies and not go back simply to tech racing and spaceship production, cause it's clear that I'm never going to win with that strategy at monarch.

Well.. today I will get new pc so I hope that faster turns helps me to concentrate more rather than get frustrated.

EDIT: I allways play continents, large or huge map, random leader and I never save progress. That might help.

imlost, I am playing on Noble level now, but it's been an education. The most successful are those with organized minds and good memories - I have a good forgettery so I have to write down steps.
Then there's luck or fortune where you open up in an isolated position and get cutoff by an AI before you realize where you are - automatic Lost Game. That's what just happened to me and I am despondent because I'd just come from a Gorgeous Victory. This reminded me of Lords of the Realm where if you start next to the countess, you lose, no 'ifs', 'ands', or 'buts'.
I'll wait a day and start another game. If I don't wait, I'll 'rush' the game in order to get to the 'good part'.
Good Luck to you and all y'all Gamers.

Prince here.

I only ever play Huge maps and Marathon time so Monarch is impossible for someone of my skill level :mischief:

Exactly.

Prince is the first level where you can actually lose.

Monarch is the first level where, at first, you will probably lose.

I'm stuck at Monarch. I think after that you have to employ some gimmicky strategies to win, and it's just not the game I want to play. Monarch is a toss-up for me right now, and a lot comes down to starting positions. I don't do well with an isolated start.

IMO, "true level" is what ever level you (as a player) can not win consistently with or one that you get the most fun out of.

I'm stuck on noble and therefore that's my "true level" at the moment (although I am getting tired of losing so much).

Once my strategies, knowledge and game mechanics improve and I can move on to the next level, that will be my "true level".

I am currently at emperor level (standard map size). I find loosing most of the time is more fun for me because it provides a goal, and when I reach it, its ever soo worth it. But in argument I think its really dependent on the size of the map, and the type of map - IMO. I have been over time trying to win on all skill levels, on all map sizes. So far I have only beaten deity on duel and tiny, which doesn't make me a deity player when I reach small or standard map size, because when I do play, I always get my arsh kicked. But eventually it will be doable, and perhaps only do-able with certain civs. So to truly gage what level you are - I think - you should gage it against map size, and how many players there are, and even perhaps what civ you are.

Hey now, when I first got the game, and was still trying to play it like previous versions of Civ, let me tell you, it was possible for me to lose.

Right now, I'm about to try Monarch for the first time, because I'm in the process of winning my 5th straight game of Prince (different leader types each time). Before I figured out the importance of Slavery (well, a few other things too, but that's the biggest), I was beating Prince less than half the time, but since then I've been gold.

Of course, once I get a look at the better AI in BtS, I might have to go back to Prince for a while. Or maybe Monarch will kick my tail without that. I know the difficulty jump from Noble to Prince was much larger than I had been expecting. If this is the same size, I might be in for some hard (but mostly fun) times.

It's not as simple as just level. I can win on Deity . . . but only if I play as the Incans on a very small map. Whereas I might lose a Prince game if trying for a domination victory on an archipelago with Korea.

At the moment I am playing on Emperor level, but without success so far (except for the aforementioned Incans).

I play on Noble, winning about 20% of my game.
I tried Prince 2 or 3 times, being completely destroyed, late in tech tree etc...

I think Noble is the true level, in a sense that all civs (HUM and CPU) are equals, no handicap.

I read many threads to improve my game, but it just improved my Noble game. I am so far away from being competitive at a higher level than Noble.

No, the CPU still has a colossal handicap at Noble: the fact that it has the brain of a mushroom, cannot learn, cannot think ahead, and has limited ability to adapt its tactics to the situation - all things the human can do with a little practice.

I think what AnyKeyz means is neither starts out with a given advantage. The human must gain the advantage by using their brain.

I still playing at Noble. I haven't been playing the game long and I still feel I sort of miss direction and keep making dumb mistakes. So I will stay on Noble a bit before I will move up to Prince.

Monarch now, but Prince for a very long time ... I do better and better each time at monarch ... sometimes replaying the same map will help you learn from mistakes as you can focus better on details and diplo relationships.

Catapults and Trebs w/ CR2 promotions ... build these in mass quantities!

Prince. I know that's my level because i've been on it for so long. I tried a noble game recently and it wasn't fun because it was so easy. I can win on prince, and have, but there are so many strategies to try based on the civ, leader, opening start, map, opponents, etc. that I kind of get lost in the choices, and that makes it fun to me.

Brave Jay, try monarch ... i enjoy getting my butt kicked & learning alot in the process ... sounds like you might be ready! :)

I'm kind of waiting for bts because the ai doesn't get the big starting and tech bonuses. I would rather take on a smarter ai than an ai who can double my growth and research artificially. we'll see. as long as i'm having fun i don't really care what level it is. ;)
