I got Civ 1 for christmas god knows how many years ago. Since then, and two copies of civ 2 (one for mac and PC) I have probably spent 5% of my time playing the game. But in the untold thousands of hours, I never played on a duffuculty level higher than chieftan. I was scared that the people would starve, and I wouldnt gain any technological advances. What are the differences between the different diffuculty levels?

Wow this is an usual post!

I guess you'll have to try that one out for yourself, and see!

Basically the computer controlled tribes get smarter, stronger and tougher to beat. And happiness becomes more of an immediate problem. Before you can play a successful game on the higher levels, you need to be proficient with micromanaging your cities, and this is basically what it is all about. Maxing out and utilizing your cities and units to their best. But I think there are plenty of threads on this in the Civ1 or Civ2 general discussions forums. This one really belongs there.

Ishmael45:

In Civs I & II, below prince level the game cheats in your favour. You are more likely to win battles, and the AI is a little dumber. On prince level, the game cheats neither way, and theoretically all is equal (except in reality the AI is predictable and not so smart). Above prince level, the game cheats in favour of the AI, so their units are more likely to win in combat, and their production costs less.

In Civ III, supposedly this works the same way, except the AI is smarter overall. Also, Chieftian has been revamped so that it's easier than it was in Civs I & II, and Diety level has been made much harder. In fact, firaxis has issued a challenge - they haven't been able to beat the AI at Diety.

In fact, firaxis has issued a challenge - they haven't been able to beat the AI at Diety.

Doesn't this mean that the AI may be impossible to beat on Deity? :(

Games which are impossible are absolutely no fun at all. People may think "Wow, if Firaxis can't do it, and they will know how the AI works, what chance do I stand? I'll stick to lower levels."

How many peole will try to beat Deity?

I definatly will try to beat deity after a few weeks of playing!
I think it is not impossible considering new Diplo/Culture ways to win.

I'm sure Firaxis have tried to beat it culturally and diplomatically and have failed.

What makes you think you even have a remote chance of winning?

Firaxis programmed the game. They know how the AI works. They can anticipate every move. They programmed the ways to win. They STILL couldn't do it.

maybe they're just bluffing so everyone will go out and buy the game to beat the AI? :goodjob:

Beating the AI at Diety in Civ II wasn't always easy either. There are some strategies that are key, like the Super Science City, We Love The Consul Day, the Democracy/Freight combo, and Infinite City Sprawl. There are also Wonders that, it turns out, are pretty much cruicial. I expect it took more than a month or two of playtesting to figure these strategies out. I await the wisdom of my fellow Civ keeners in the Civ III Strategies forum!

There are a lot of Civ players out there chomping at the bit, waiting to prove that they are smarter/more determined than the Firaxis playtesters. I know I plan to spend a 4-day weekend or two giving it my best! Given a favourable starting spot, with room to expand and handy luxuries/stragegic resources, I certainly expect it to be possible to win no matter how much the Comp cheats.

As for "knowing how the AI works"...I already know how the AI works...Like a human, only not as insightful, forethoughtful, creative, or unpredictable! Such is life with AIs, although I am hoping for a big improvement from Civ II.

I've only played one game above Warlord and I performed quite poorly. For two years Civilization 2 was the only game I could play and only in the past few months have I played on Warlord.

*Resolution*
Damn the torpedoes...my first game of Civ 3 will be on Prince level! Bring the hurt!

Ah ah ah...you are assuming I am sane...which I am not (at least not by conventional standards)

I never said how long my first game would be (my guess is X where X< 1a.d.). My second game WILL probably be on chieftan. But I'll probably push myself overly hard anyway. Trying on levels above my capability has frustrated me into greatness before. Whatever works. This does bring up the point that assuming that just because you (pardon my use of l33t Sp34k) r0XX0rEd in Civ 2 doesn't mean you'll do the same in Civ 3...in fact I hope that you whole gameplay paradigm will have to change.

As someone said somewhere, unless I imagined it:

They are game programmers. We are game players. There is 0 question that someone will have beat Deity within a week. Probably within a day or two, but I won't for sure that one.

As for knowing the AI, the lead-AI programmer has admitted to being surprised more than once by his own AI.

Welcome Ishmael45. I have a strong suspicion your question is Civ2 related rather than Civ3. Civ3 is the normal subject matter of this forum, so I'm moving your query to "Civ2 General Discussions"

i think it's so hard to beat the AI now because they're are so many ways to win. You can't beat the AI to everything...

(just have to get this in)

i think that its cheting if u play under prince, cuz on the prince level, thats when the ai first can build wonders before u have the tech

Just for the record, the ICS/Infinite City Sprawl is not necessary to beat the AI at Deity; I mention this only because I don't care for the ICS as a strategy.

Well, aren't you great. Please enlighten us with your stellar strategies after that first game victory.
