Diplomacy modifiers and waning memory

Hello,

One thing which bother me in Civ4 (Vanilla or FFH, same thing) is that ALL diplomacy modifiers are permanent.

I understand that some should be updated regularly, like 'You use Death Mana' or 'Close borders spark tensions', but modifiers from the past are not realistic and even impede gameplay.

For example you traded with his worst enemy at turn 15. Turn 300, you still have the modifier! Even modifiers like 'you declared war on us', 'you made arrogant demand' should fade away after an hefty number of turns.

This is what happen in the real world too, nothing is set to stone. Even after the various wars of the XXth centuries they had together, USA and Germany are now friends, to take one striking example among too many to count.

Please consider this concept.

Yeah, I really think that all the old modifiers should be slowly reduced and eventually eliminated. Those that are updated, like alignment, civics, and mana use, would be exceptions.

Yeah, for example if I happen to capture a city that has previously contained the sepulcher in its fat cross, I get the death mana modifier, even if I immediately convert it to Life (or whatever). More than a little bit annoying.

Both Civ4 and FfH feature unchanging, immortal leaders, so it makes some sense that something as serious as a war declaration or a city razing never leaves their memory.

The more minor stuff, like refusal to give tribute and trading with worst enemy, does decay over time. The rate is random though. It could take 5 turns, it could take 500.

And the rate is influenced by the leader. Some leaders will hold a grudge for ages, some don't mind what you've done previously as long as you're playing nice now. Depends on the personality.

Hannah in my last game was quite odd in that respect. She started out quite friendly towards me, then mid-game she got into a messy war with the Hippus and kept asking me for help against them... By the end of the game she considered me her worst enemy, largely due to her -9 "You refused to help us during wartime"
