Hi, i'm new, and i've played civ 3 for a long while. lately i have been interested in improving in the game. i moved up to warlord i think, and i chose the largest maps with as many random civs. my civ is also random. i was just asking for some tips on expanding on the start and being able to continue the game with only diplomacy. but i also want a large amount of territory. can anyone help me out, or contribute their own strategies?

Expand fast with a fast granary and try for a 4, 5 ot 6-turn settler factory. Then trade techs and luxuries. Build your culture to flip border cities, and have settlers ready in case an AI war razes some cities to open up space for cities.

Welcome to CFC! [party]

thanks Tomoyo, one question though, I have some border cities right now, and i have a large culture, but the cities wont flip. and about the settler factory, it takes about 5 turns+ to build a settler right? one more thing i've been playing this game war free, and it works swell, but i cant really get far far ahead of the other civs in tech.
some specs of this game:
600+ gold per turn
democracy- iroqouis
no cheats
high culture
industrial age

How much is your science set to? How much gpt are you recieving from the AIs?

Regarding the settler factory, if you get a lucky starting position, you can do 4-turn settlers, like in this tutorial.

The War Academy (Don't worry, it is for peace too) helps too.

Do you have enough workers? (i.e. Do you still have tiles to improve?) Do you have all the scientific improvements?

good point, i'll get a pic in a sec to show. i get about 150 from one civ, 25-50 from 2 others (i gave them a tech or 2 for that much gpt!!!)
i think i need more workers, because they are improving the land very slowly, and i have a lot of 12 pop cities. as for the tech rate, its at 50% (1 tech every 4 turns optimum)-duno y its so good. *probably cuz of all the improvements*

btw, those huge gtp form the other civs, i used those to slow them down with tech.

More territory at this point would mean wars instead of diplomacy. Tomoyo's advice about settler factories pertain to the early game. For a diplomatic win just keep on researching and trading until you can build the UN. You do not need to be very far ahead of the AIs, but with 4 turn research and the Theory of Evolution wonder it should be possible to create a gap.

Definately more workers until the land is all railroaded. I think you have too much irrigation as well but this might needed come hospitals. Try to research sanitation soon. After terraforming is completed workers not needed to clean pollution can be remerged into the cities.

ok, thanks.
but one more question. lets say i want to steal information form other civilizations using a spy, what do i do to get that spy to have a higher success rate? what to do to make the spy a veteran or elite instead of a regular?

Commies have veteran spies, Fasces have elite spies.

Spies have a higher success rate than embassies.

hey, finished the game.
got a pretty high rating "Hiawatha the Conqueror"
at least a lot higher than ussual
i noticed on the results of polls, my military service was 14th place with "2 years"
how do you increase it?
o yeah, its pretty hard to acquire resources with diplomatic victory, unless you have a rapid expansion at the start.
i recommend cultural and expansionist civ now.
thanks for all the help people.

It's dependant on how many military units you have in comparison to yuor total amount of citizens. To increase it just build more military units while stopping your growth of citizens to prevent the population from rising, but you shouldn't do this just to increase military service as it is just a funny thing not affecting the game.

thanks theoden

i started a new game on regeant, with the arabs(expansion religous)
i got a good amount of space ofter producing constant settlers for faster expansion
until i couldn't expand my borders anymore, i built nothing but settlers
which meant i was defensless (for some reason i dont worry because i never get attacked)
after that i built defense and started producing temples and libraries.
then i started using diplomacy to my advantage
i traded techs and reduced my teach rate to 0%
i hope someone can give me advice on what to do next, because i plan on continueing at this pace.
