Diplomacy suggestions

They always do...

Are you certain? I was under the impression that they just ask you to do this whenever they feel like it. In any case, when I refuse, they rarely go to war with the Civ that they wanted me to go to war with, but I didn't know that I actually influenced their war decisions.

Well, if you agree to it, they go to war, if not, well they probably decide not to because of lack of force or something of the sort...

The AI asking you to go to war with someone is one of the most annoying things.

if i politely refuse, why should i get a penalty for that, unless we're allies or at least very close.
The AI shouldn't even ask you, if your not close, to do such a thing unless they have something to offer, like techs or money.

I don't think that AI leaders should ever ask you to declare war on someone that they aren't at war with, except when they're going to go to war with that someone on the same turn.

I also think that the AI leaders should never ask you to declare war on someone if you're already at war, except when the AI is already at war with both the Civ you're at war with and the Civ that they want you to declare war on.

Also, I think AI leaders should always offer you something or somethings in return for going to war with a Civ unless they've been at war with that same Civ for a few rounds and are losing, and they are pleased/friendly with you;
Those all sound good.

or if they don't have anything substantial to give to you.
This should be like, "Please! We need your help!!! Take pity on us!!!!!!!"

Heh, my thoughts exactly. Of course, if I understand Warlords' features correctly, maybe they could offer themselves up as vassal states instead...

Also, I'll reiterate here, a bonus for returning cities. Unless that is grouped into trade relations bonus, there doesn't appear to be one. If one was planning on betraying them, you probably wouldn't be returning their cities.
Yes, and for gifting units. Sometimes I won't join a war with someone for one reason or another, but I'll send out some units and gift them over. I remember a Vanilla game I played where I was forced out of a war but I kept gifting units to my ally who was getting his butt kicked. I gave him quite a few . . .

On the flip-side, it would be logical for there to be diplomacy penalties related to these. For instance, returning a city or gifting units to a civ's enemy should make that civ unhappy with you. Tit for tat makes for complicated code . . .

though it's similar to the "you have traded with our worst enemy" that is already in place, so it might be not so complicated to implement it...

Well, in the case of gifting cities, perhaps it wouldn't be too hard. But, in the case of units, should an enemy always know that you've done that? One could argue yes, as you are aware of all basic deals between other civs (e.g., Open Borders, Mutual Defense, ...).

Why not?

I know I get the AI leaders to declare wars on others when I'm not involved in any, every now and then...

Same here - every chance I get :D

Perhaps, then, the complaint should be changed to: the AI leaders should be clear if they intend to go to war as well, or if they're just trying to bribe you into attacking their enemy on your own.

Good idea. They should say whatever flavor/personality text they have, and there should be a little parenthetical next to it that says (war alone) or (war together) based on the circumstances.
