I was hoping to finish, and win, my first Diplo. Victory(DV) last night - then start the GOTM, but noooooo...

I played the game knowing I would be going for the DV right from the beginning, I gave all the civs that demanded stuff from me exactly wut they wanted, and more! Finally I created the UN and I was about 3-4 tech up on the computers (monarchy level), so I gave gifts too all the super powers in the game, gifts of nuclear fission, rocketry, space flight, computers... i have 5000$ also, so i gave gifts of 1000gp to them, I specifically wanted to try winning with DV but the carpet has been pulled out from under me. 3 votes for Xerxes, 2 abstain, and 1 for me.... me ( cleo :egypt: )

Can someone give me some specific examples of how to win their votes? please dont give me any vague advice, eg 'be nice to them' or 'give them stuff', Im not interested in winning this game any other way, Ive been way to nice to everyone to not get the DV now, HELP! TIA!

Romans = Gracious
Persians = Polite
Babs = Polite
= And 2 others and Annoyed, which I cant seem to reverse, even with tons of gifts. Ive never been at war with the Germans, but with their friends, the English.

Heh this proves my theory that winning a diplomatic victory isnt as easy as the warmongers make you think. Someone said that if you sign MPPs with everyone right before the vote that that always works, but I havent tried it myself. I doubt it works, but you may want to try it.

ROP, resources, luxuries (great gifts) and carrying the weight of a MPP in battle on their behalf. Also, do not break any agreements, period. You want the majority to be gracious toward you before calling the vote, just to be safe.

It is very hard to test / confirm empirically, because you need to play full games to do so! Nonetheless, it has been my experience that, rather than trying to bribe them at the end (or during the second half) of the game, your best bet for achieveing a diplomatic victory is to trade and enter into diplomatic agreements constantly, throughout the game -- and of course keep to your agreements. You mention that you gave the other civs "what they demanded" -- rather than having them demand things, a constant stream of trade deals (luxuries, techs, strategic resources) and the willingness to enter into RoPs, MPPS etc., seems to me to do far more to enhance my reputation (and win the vote) than bribing or gifting large sums of money, luxuries, etc. Be a valued trading partner (not just a donor) and you may find greater success at the UN!

BTW, IMVHO, winning the UN vote in the manner I describe provides a great deal more satisfaction than either: (1) trying to furiously bribe everyone towards the end of the game, or (2) entering into MPPs with everyone and then goading your most significant rival into a war before the vote. Either of the foregoing victories has, for me, a hollowness to it - and if you really want your first diplomatic victory, I encourage you to shoot for it the hard way -- by making yourself a key trading partner / ally with other civs.

Good luck!

The answear is to find the most hated civ(except you :)) and then get as many military alliances against him as possible. MPP are ok, but Military Alliance's are a safer bet. Then hold the elections.

This is logical, since the the civs would rather vote for their ally, than their enemy.

Ive been playing the Diplomatic role since the very beginning, giving them gifts, money, ALWAYS my world map, and sometimes luxuries... as for the comment about offering/trading with them instead of waiting for them to "demand", I cant believe it, but the AI demands a tech I just learned the turn after I got it... not really fair that they "know" exactly when I got the tech to begin with but whatever...

Im gonna try the RoP and MPP way to see if I can get a couple more of the votes... thx fer yer help guys.

/me crosses fingers.

PS: This turned out to be one of my best games ever, I had no idea I had it in me to take such a commanding lead even on my first attempt at Monarch.

I didn't do a very good job of making clear my main point in my first post -- whether you start early in the game or late in the game, I have found it is better to trade with them than to give to them, even if the trades semm very one-sided -- maybe gifting just builds resentment at the sugar daddy ;)? Don't be afraid to build up your military so you won't get so many demands. And don't be afraid to refuse demands -- if that particular AI declares war, you have an opportunity to ally with others - as has been pointed out by others, alliances significantly strengthen your relationship with AI civs. In any event, also recognize that, if you have a commanding lead, it is harder to maintain good relations -- the AI wants to win too and sees you as an obstacle!

P.S. Congrats on a great first game at Monarch.

You don't just need MPPs, you need them activated and the Civs to actually declare war on your competitor. And that shouldn't be more than 3 turns before the vote!

So sign the MPPs, declare war, get attacked (do not attack yourself!) the turn before the vote!!!!!

In my experience that depends somewhat on the difficulty level. On Chieftain it seems quite simple to approach the victory by throwing gifts at your opponents 12 months before you build the UN.

I think we need some enlightenment from Firaxis on this one to clear something like this up.

Hmm... I've found that Diplo victories are quite easy to obtain if you have it planned out in advance, i.e. you don't just throw gifts at them the turn before the vote. I have had five diplo victories so far (it's my least favorite) and I had no problem buttering up the AI. Stay out of wars, agree to demands, trade a lot, and most importantly, SIGN ROP's and MPP's. I won every vote in a landslide.

I have only won diplo once. The entire game, I never was in a single war. Then at the end, I was force into a war with Greece with a stupid MMP I signed. Everyone else was at war with them, too. I got a leader after I took the last Greek city, and used him to rush UN. I had no intention of winning in that fashion, and as such never gave the AI's anything for free, no tribute, though I did sign a few MMP's when asked. I still got all but one vote.
My advice is, to win diplo, NEVER GO TO WAR, unless the entire world (or most of it) are against one, you are drawn in by MMP, and have every intention of wiping out that civ. Even then, make sure that that Civ has no MMP with someone else.

Octavian describes exactly what you need to win: get into a war with one guy that everyone else is at war with, too!

Even if you don't win the first time (happened to me once when I'd been real bad :lol: ) it will at worst be undecided, so just do it again 20 turns later!
