Discussion time.....Fight or wait.

If we can get that settler on flat ground, I say kill the Mongols! :ar15: Otherwise, let's start preparing for war and do whatever's necessary to deny them that iron. Then kill the Mongols! :ar15:

I disagree...I hate to see us lose an ax or more than one ax just for a worker. I am talking their counterattacks...we still arent sure if they have horses and their UU

Look at what we gain if we let them build the city to size 2 and then take it and their other ciites with a proper fighting force.

I say we wait for them to settle, and since we have open borders, no matter what, have an axe sit on the iron. Then prepare for war. If we can get the iron in our borders, than yay for us, but if we can't, the moment a worker aproaches the iron, we kill him with the axe. Also, do we have other sources of iron, because if we do, we should pump out swordsmen for the now inevitbale mongol war.

i would like to revise my opinion, i think we should send a scout or something down to that patch of horses as soon as possible and just keep it around there to see how close they are to hooking up the horses.

Well, I'll express my opinion aswell.
From what we have seen so far, the Mongols have probably second city on riverbank and they have horses and wheat in rangem so they'll get the horses very soon. The new settler is probably going to settle next to the lake to get in range the iron and the pigs. The trouble is the lake as it will probably connect the city via river and cost to the capitol as soon as he gets Sailing and he'll do that probably very soon as his capitol is coastal city.
So my suggestion is to start war preparations right ahead and send at least one axe towards his horses. We let him settle and get that city later. We should attack him very soon to deny him access to horses or iron. He now doesn't pose any real threat to our units as he has just defensive archers ... so don't let him get neither horses nor iron which might change the situation! So I guess that my proposal means war in couple of turns ... probably next TC ... but we'll see more as we explore the area of his second city.

In 4 turns we should know about his horses and southern city location since we are 4 tiles from the horse.

We will start building units..if the governors of each city deisre that. BW will finish the library first as well as the obelisk in Abydos since I dont want to attack until after his city grows to size 2. I agree if he can get the iron without roads then we will need to do something very quickly like kill his worker and pillage. Remember..he either had to bring a worker from another city or make one...so that is a few turns away..probably longer than the next turnchat is my gut feeling since he does not have any in the northern part of his territory.

I will collate the opinions expressed here and post an opinion only poll that I will use for guidance...it will not have the option to declare war right now..that needs to be a seperate poll.

For those worried about a river route to get iron... I submit the following picture.

He would have to have a city on 2 seperater rivers or build roads between the rivers in neutral territory..something we can pillage at will.

/old picture from term 2 Pink is resources, red is hills blue are units

Sounds like we need to stalk that settler a few turns before deciding if we want to capture it or let it build a city. Any chance we could come up with some provisional orders? It looks like we have a good idea where the Mongols want to put that city. Could we not stop play the turn before that settler gets there? By then we may have a better idea of whether or not they have horses.
