This problem has happened to me a few times. There will be various small line clusters on my display (looking sort of like pickup sticks) and the cursor looks something like a miniature Excel spread sheet. The system locks up so that alt-tab or ctrl-alt-delete does nothing. I have to do a warm reboot.
I am running XP Professional XP3 with a Nvidia 8800 GTS 512 card (258.96 drivers). Nothing is overclocked on my system and my display has the game default settings for a 1900 X 1280 60 Hz display.
I have seen a similar problem with only one other program on my computer and that, interestingly enough, was with Civ 4 (but it happened much less often).
Although this lockup mainly happens after many turns, today it happened during my first turn.
