Divine Intervention V: Montezuma's Madness

Spoiler :
The gods were pleased. Well, some of them. Others raged at Montezuma and cursed his actions, and others still teased his mind with temptations and promises. Though he was immortal, and contained a spark of divinity within, Montezuma was...disturbed...by so many contacts with these gods.

A shadow in the deep recesses of Montezuma's mind began to grow, and fed upon the contact with the gods when they visited. Montezuma himself was unware of this, and only time would tell what this shadow could mean.

==================================================

Montezuma again sat before the map of the known lands in the war room of his palace, advisors gathered 'round. They were not sure what to expect, for the Aztec lord had a strange look in his eyes. All of them knew of the changing of the lands around them, but were not sure which of the gods had been responsible for what.

"Scribe." Montezuma spoke.

The young slave rushed forward, presenting the advisors with a list, the contents of which made all their faces turn pale. For on the list were the words and demands of the gods, and they knew that no matter the course their ruler chose, the Aztec people would feel the wrath of one or more deities.

Montezuma, though, was calm.

"Some of these gods order, some demand, but Montezuma has the right of it. Montezuma knows which gods favor the Aztec, and which gods are merely jealous! This is Montezuma's plan!"

With that, the slave unrolled a larger parchment, and, slowly at first, Montezuma's advisors smiled, and nodded in agreement with the immortal. Surely with these plans, the gods would be well pleased.

==================================================

In the north, near York, the Aztec forces found themselves facing a number of chariot units from both Sumeria and England. While strong fighters, the Aztec axemen rarely fared well against these foes. However, always willing to sacrifice where necessary, the Aztecs cunningly teased and taunted the enemy with the chance to recover their enslaved workers. Then, they would strike!

t151-chariots.jpg

t151-chariots2.jpg

t151-chariots3.jpg

Unfortunately, not all things go according to plan. Although they had the advantage, the troops stationed in York were routed. Gilgamesh captured the city.

t152-fail-attack.jpg

t153-gilg-cap-york.jpg

It was of little concern, though, as a Jaguar squad easily mopped up the skeleton force of chariots that had invaded the city. York would remain in Aztec hands.

Near the homeland, though, it was as if the wild men of the jungles had gone mad - hordes of barbarians threw themselves against the Aztec cities and troops. They were everywhere!

t156-barbs.jpg

t157-barbs.jpg

t158-barbs.jpg

t159-barbs.jpg

The homeland was safe, for the Aztec warriors were fierce and strong!

Victoria could not say the same for her lands, however. By Montezuma's orders, Nihil's siege machines had been painstakingly transported to the walls of London. Now, they rained death upon the city.

t163-bomb-london.jpg

The English capitol was now in Aztec hands, and the survivors fled to the north, where the English had established a small refuge town.

t164-cap-london.jpg

Roosevelt, the very-friendly American, was contacted with an offer to share the Aztec knowledge of Mathematics in exchange for some useful bits.

t166-roos-trade.jpg

Still the barbarians came. But, still was the Aztec homeland safe and protected.

t169-barbs.jpg

With the army recovered and rested from the battle of London, they marched to put an end to the English foe for good. The English troops fought to the bitter end now, and the captured ones were brought before Montezuma.

t171-vicky-dead.jpg

Standing at the edge of the sea, Montezuma heard its call. The waters held a strange pull on his soul, and Montezuma wondered if it was the goddess Aquaris. He would know soon enough, for he had done her bidding and the rivers of England ran red with the blood of the Aztec nation's enemy. Now, those few English soldiers that had survived the final battle at Hastings were gathered in shackles on the desert sands by the sea near Teotihuacan. The civilians had all been pressed into slavery and were busy improving the lands that were now home to Aztecs.

Raising his arms, Montezuma called out to the goddess.

"Montezuma has done the bidding of Aquaris, and the lands of the English are no more! Their queen, Victoria, lies dead at Aztec hands! All this we have done for you, goddess, and in defiance of the god of Aether!

Now Montezuma calls upon you, goddess! Show your favor to the Aztec people, and make these dead lands wash away, and be home to the fish of the sea so that the people of Teotihuacan and elsewhere may benefit from this bounty. Montezuma asks this, and also calls upon you to protect your faithful from any wrath of this Aether god!

For this, we give you a final sacrifice!!"

With his final words, Montezuma slashed his hands downward, and the throats of all the English soldiers on the beach were cut as one...the desert sands stained red.

With this victory, Montezuma was elevated even further amongst the Aztec people, and was proclaimed sole monarch, answerable to none but himself and the gods.

t178-monarchy.jpg

==================================================

The fury of the wild barbarians continued unabated, crashing through the jungles towards the Aztec lands in great numbers. But still the Aztecs held. And so too did the lands of Techenhuan, for the Chotec gate had been reinforced by a formidable fort. Montezuma ordered that a garrison be stationed there, to defend the fort and keep any and all from entering the lands within.

t182-barbs.jpg

The army had not been idle. Bolstered by new troops from the homelands, they marched straight for the Sumerian lands. Gilgamesh had not been idle, though, and new Sumerian cities were discovered. It mattered not to the Aztecs, though - all Sumeria would burn!

And so it did, starting with the city of Kish.

t186-raze-kish.jpg

Desperate and pathetic in the face of the Aztec might and fury, the Sumerians attempted to reconcile. Montezuma would hear nothing. The so-called god king Gilgamesh would die.

t189-sumerian-mercy.jpg

The army assembled at the mighty walls of Uruk, bolstered by their siege machines. The Aztecs would not be leaving without a fight this time!

t194-army-at-uruk.jpg

t197-uruk-attack2.jpg

t197-raze-uruk.jpg

Uruk burned. Only Eridu remained of the Sumerian cities. Montezuma would not wait - it must fall NOW! Sumerian troops had been spotted near the city of Tlaxcala, and there was no time to reinforce it. It was a desperate gamble by the Sumerians, but it would be in vain.

t199-gilg-army.jpg

t199-raze-eridu.jpg

With the fall of Eridu and the death of Gilgamesh, the Sumerian army disbanded and scattered. Some were later captured, and along with those taken in the battles in Sumerian lands, Montezuma had enough to give in sacrifice to both the Lizardmind and the god Nihil.

Finger pointing at the sky, Montezuma addressed Nihil.

"Nihil god, Montezuma calls on you now! The mighty Aztec have conquered both the vile English and the cowardly Sumerians. The builders of the "great wall" have learned well their lesson. Now, all that is left of Sumeria's so-called army is gathered here in chains.

Montezuma has fulfilled your task, Nihil god! Now we await your rewards and blessings!"

The hand chopped, and so too did the axes of the Aztec standing near each captive.

Later, Montezuma stood in the fort at Chotec gate, with a collection of Sumerian workers captured in the lands around the now-burned cities. Looking out over the fort wall into the jungled lands of Techenhuan, Montezuma spoke, hoping that the thing calling itself Lizardmind could hear.

"Montezuma has aided Lizardmind, and the purpleclad Sumerians lay dead! Montezuma brings these last few to Chotec gate, so that Lizardmind may witness the actions that the Aztec take. Chotec gate is defended, and Sumeria is burned, because of the Aztec.

Watch now, what the Aztec have done for you."

Montezuma turned back to the huddled Sumerians and nodded to the Aztec warriors gathered around. The Sumerians died.

==================================================

Back at his palace, Montezuma read the reports from his commanders in Sumeria. The army had regrouped, with some elements sent out to ensure that no Sumerians remained to pose a threat. Unwritten, but understood by Montezuma, was that the war machines from Nihil had not been destroyed ... this due to a silent and unwritten communication between Montezuma and his general Leonidas before he had gone to the front.

t200-army.jpg

Looking out to the sea, Montezuma wondered what the consequences and rewards of this action would be.

==================================================

The end of the Aztec campaign against the English and Sumerians also coincided with the development of a time-marking calendar. Well pleased with all that had been done, Montezuma declared the day of the final battle with Sumeria as a kingdom holiday.

t200-calendar.jpg

And once again, the Americans were contacted to share some knowledge.

t200-roos-trade.jpg

The gods demands had been heeded, and the Aztecs stood strong. But of a majority, their hearts belonged to the religion of Tree, which had spread to nearly all corners of the Aztec lands, and was the only established religion amongst all the gods the Aztecs knew.

His lord excellence Montezuma declares "Got It"
The Update will be posted tomorrow afternoon(EST)

His Excellence also decree's that a one "unscratchedfoot" puts a spoiler tab around his post due to excess amounts non-content material that really get annoying

His Excellence would wish you a good day but he has a rebellion to squash, a war to start, a economy to save, and gods to appease.

Whispers in the dark... That's all it had to be, and yet Montezuma slept uneasily. Pain and vivid images flashed through his mind. Aztecia being torn asunder, groans deep beneath the earth, and the winds of power changing in the world.

The world Montezuma awoke to was nearly beyond words........."nearly"

"REBELLION?! HOW DARE THE REBEL TREE KISSING SKUM DARE THINK THEY CAN RUN THIS EMPIRE WITHOUT ME AND MY AUTHORITY, JOHNATHON!" Montezuma called out for the General-Chief of Aztecia. The corpses of the few loyal governors escaped from the captured cites, and the generals of that region littered the floor of the throne room.
"Johnathon, take care of this situation for me," Johnathon raised a hand to protest, " I don't care if they are Aztec, they are no longer citizens of the empire, and your job is to kill them, now don't let me see you again until every scrap of land and loot is back in my possession.

Johnathon did just that
Civ4ScreenShot0027.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0028-1.jpg

The empire was restored, but cities thousands of years old, were nearly razed in the process, granerys, university's, library's, Alters....all gone, it would take years for the Aztec war machine to gear up again.

Civ4ScreenShot0025.jpg

And yet, the rebellion most likely prolonged the fleet from heading out long enough to build a supply of these new instruments, and the fleet sailed, ready for war.

***

Civ4ScreenShot0026-1.jpg

It chilled Montezuma to the core. involuntarily his left hand lifted from Gilgamesh's skull on his throne. A person long deceased stood in front of him. Hard feelings were gone he said, for some reason Shaka is taking his time. Montezuma was not one to turn down a power in this world, Gilly was much, much more richer, advanced and powerful then Montezuma. An ally, not a victim would he have to become.

However....Pope Brennus did not take to kindly to the walking dead ruling a nation...
Civ4ScreenShot0030-1.jpg

"Gilgamesh is as inept at warring as he was two thousand years ago. He has not attacked Shaka at all, and has not built any troops at all, he is just...building." Montezuma laughed to his court. A fool paraded around the throne room, dressed in Sumerian clothing, Gilgamesh was not well respected in Aztec lands.

------------------------

Excerpt from the Encyclopedia Aztecia...

The years leading up to the first war were mainly a building and filling affair, with the aztecian economy beginning to rise, the south was tamed, and settled.

Also during this time, scouts to Khan's Tresor were sent, the news was grim to the monarchy, a great horde was beginning to be unleashed

Civ4ScreenShot0034.jpg

Politically, the world was united underneath the God's banner to drive back the Sumerian menace, pr opting new relationships.
Civ4ScreenShot0037-1.jpg

Of course, after the war most political respect for Aztecia was lost, but for the meantime, Aztecia was liked...for the most part

Johnathon looked out upon the coasts of Zululand, the storms of the narrow sea behind him, this day there would be war.

***

Johnathon could not count the number of corpses left behind, the backwards Zulu's were no match against the rifles of the Aztecs, at the Gates of Ulundi Johnathon marched in and declared the city in the name of lord Montezuma.
Civ4ScreenShot0043.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0044-1.jpg

Johnathon gave the order to shoot them, a barage of bullets split the Zulu's force down, they would not get to see their homes, or their beautiful home city again, Aztecia had won this war.

Civ4ScreenShot0049-1.jpg

Mercy for the fallen Zulu people was granted.

----------

"Two fleets we need to take him down...he is too large with out it." The days had been filled since the Zulu victory, Spain and Celtia was at war again, and it looked like Spain was about to buckle, it had lost most of its northern cities in the struggle.

Civ4ScreenShot0053-1.jpg

Montezuma would not let her fall, Aztecia would come to the rescue of the Spanish people and pacify the Celtic threat to the world.

Oil would be a problem....Celtia almost had rifles, with Aztecan science slowing, and Celtic discoverys rapidly increasing, a large modern army would be required...but barbarians from the city of light had taken back Uzbek.

Civ4ScreenShot0047-1.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0052-1.jpg

The Pentagon, or the Temple of Five as Montezuma liked to call it. Nihli, Perpentach, Phaleap, The unknown entity that Gilgamesh has eluded at, and Nictel. The five gods that had caused war in the world. And Montezuma would continue in their name.

But whose side were the god's on?
Civ4ScreenShot0054-1.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0055.jpg

----------------------------

The hot southern desert sun beat down on Montezuma's head, alone he walked up the hill. Inside he went, each step sounding like laughter. Montezuma would not be denied. Answers would be needed, and power...

Civ4ScreenShot0056-1.jpg

Up the stairs he went, to the top most level....Montezuma looked around, and a soft jingle was heard.

You know you should have taken the new island it is full of oil.
So Spain gets there ass kicked, what does Isabella build?
Spoiler :
A freaking settler!!

But on a more important note: You might want to finish the turn, at least the build orders cause you can't do anything before you did them. Now we're happy to build West Point in your science city but you might not agree ;)

As the Aztec workers entered the Shrine of Defiance, an old and grand tower, they heard the gentle sound of jingling bells. Looking around in the dark room, they slowly and cautiously entered.

Suddenly, a ray of light illuminated a pillar in the middle of the room. On top of it stood the jester, Perpentach, smiling. Perhaps it was just the effect of the light and the pillar, but he looked... Larger than he used to. His makeup was still a mix of the snow-white and the lively blood-red colours. As he spoke, his voice rang so loud that none of the men would forget the message:

"Aztec has shown virtue, I daresay!
You play the head role in my little play,
For this I will reward you well,
but I have another thing to tell:
Still two virtues you lack,
of those you must keep track;
My final reward will be free to see,
once you have learnt of Greed and... Heresy."

The jesters words were immidiately carried to Montezuma.

Spoiler NFTE (Changes - need someone to do them!) :
On the tile named Shrine of Defiance, grant the Aztecs the following units:
1 Infantry with Woodsman I, II, III, Guerilla I, II, III, named Avatar of Defiance,
4 Rifles with Woodsman I and III, Guerilla I and III, named Minion of Defiance
Give Montezuma 500 gold.
Furthermore, distribute among the continents of the world 10 barbarian Cuirassiers, with the following stats:
Name: Messenger of the Apocalypse
Promotions: Mobility, Combat V (not I-IV).
Make sure at least one of the units are visible for Aztecs.
Give Celtia and Sumer 6 Riflemen each, no names or promotions (except Gillly's Protective promos).
Have Isabella make peace with Gilgamesh.
Clear ALL jungle in Old Sumeria (now Aztec territory)
Spread Judaism to almost all Aztec cities.

Quick question, how easy was it to take the oil island?

It was just lying there so I would say incredibly easy. Now of course the AI has it, Issy has the biggest part with 3 cities and old island colony man has two. I wonder if he'll give up his other island now. Though luck for monty. As conquering them back from Izzy is out of the question and if she becomes Brennus' vassal well that would be fun.

Spoiler NFTE :
I would like it if the other gods leave the island alone. :)

Quick question, how easy was it to take the oil island?

if you meant uzbek....the infantry was gone, only a longbowman remained

@Nictel: well....i may have been over eager to end the round....but i will trust the gods to at least not screw up anything, and if someone who is nice enough could just hit skip turn on the units that pop up, then the round will be over

In that case: got it.

Will do your edits as well DE.

"If the jester you must hear
consider which you hold dear
Is it the power, greed, and pain
hallmarks of mater'iel gain?

Yes, you cry, you scream, you plead
none of the signs I've yet to read
tell me of the price to pay
that comes later along this way"

Can you hear them, boy? a voice whispered, as dark stars flared over his vision.

They will mock you for your ambition, soon, the jealous gods, but you must pay them no heed. Take these shrines, take them and show the world your power of the divine.

And with a searing pain a shard of black pierced his chest, burrowing into him and he blacked out.

Present day.

"Well hello there Montezuma"
Startled Montezuma turned around, he was alone a minute ago. He wasn't going to call for the guards, no need he was able to defeat any assassin.
But this was no assassin, Aquaris herself had decided to meet with Montezuma at this time of despair.

"Montezuma listen to me, my lands are in danger. The war against the Celts isn't going well.
"War against the Celts? Why does a God fight wars against mortals?"
"It is true. Isabella and Aquaris are the same person, though both do not exist. I am actually Ianassa one of the fifty Nereids. By pure chance I found myself upon this world. I have some powers but they are given to me through old artefacts my father gave to me. When I landed upon this world a bunch of tribesmen crowned me their queen. I decided to play along and in the mean time try to find a way to my own world. I still haven't been able to find this path. In you I saw a powerful ally, I still do, I hoped I could help you and help myself in the process. Now however darkness comes from the north, were great armies threaten my people. More darkness comes from within the world itself. Be wary of the sixth pointed star, you must not raise the six pillars that are required by the beast or all will perish! I will continue to help you in your quest. Together we can be victorious!"

Spoiler Results from turnset :

  • Defy Nihil Continues but you didn't follow him so Done.
  • Settle on the new island Failed.
  • Mouth of Khan will open after this turnset. PREPARE Hope you did.
  • You may research flight but of course forget all about capturing a fortress with it or something ;-) See above.
  • Capture Bibracte (Celtic Capital) before entering the Modern Age. Do not raze it. (It holds the Hanging Gardens.) Continues.
  • Have a permanent Alliance with Izzy. (At the end of the turnset after this one.) Continues.

Spoiler What to do :
  • Continue defying Nihil
  • Spread the Balance to your cities. (Taoism.)
  • Capture Khan's Tresor
  • Capture Bibracte (Celtic Capital) before entering the Modern Age. Do not raze it. (It holds the Hanging Gardens.)
  • Have a permanent Alliance with Izzy
  • In case Izzy decides to give up and the AI throws my plans around, your objective is to liberate Spain from whatever rule it is under.
  • Do not cause the destruction of the world.

Spoiler Changes :
Like I said added a bunch of cities, for the exact number and locations I kindly redirect to the save file. Also opened the 'Mouth of khan' isn't going to be that disruptive I think.

Spoiler NFTE :
Diamondeye I added in all your changes except the +500 gold. I know a way to do it. (Change the file to a worldbuilder save then change the gold then load it as a normal save again.) But I'm too worried I make a mistake and everybody ends up having to do their changes over.

My Message to the World

I am the God of Luck. During the history of this world, I have battled to create a stable world with nations working together, so that the world would be able to take on the challenges the future would hold. Yet there has always been one thorn in my side, one mortal who would not listen to my message even if I had came offering the greatest gifts the gods could offer. That thorn has been Montezuma. He has fought me at my every turn, even turning against the Tree after thousands of years of protection. He was a rabid dog who should have been put down.

Yet I did not do so. I gave him a second chance. I thought every person deserved a second chance, even those who have conquered one of his peaceful neighbours and razed the cities of his other neighbour. And at first he seemed to follow my guidance and so I reduced the punishment I had doled out to him previously. Yet as soon as I had even shown the smallest leniency, he decides that the God of Luck will be ignored once again.

I have failed this world. War has ravaged this world, aided by the gods who feast upon such travesties against nature. It's people stand alone, not united as they should be. Will the Aztec's banners fly above every city, picking each nation off one by one?

No.

I am the God of Luck. Deep down in my soul, at the core of my being, I know this world is doomed. I may be wrong. My power has faded, as each faint future possibility for this world resolves itself to one position. Each future is like a feather, drifting down to doom. There may be one future left out of billions where the world stands free, but I can not see it.

The dark is coming. Whatever line the future followed, whatever permutation of probability the world moved down, the dark will come. The dark will flow across the globe and it will spread, taking everything with it. It is strong, stronger than any god. It has fed upon four, only two remain free, yet how long will the pair stand? Not long, as Montezuma will hand them willingly to the darkness and then the darkness will rule the world, betraying even those who have trusted it's every word.

I leave this world, for I can do no more. Maybe I am a coward, but is it truly cowardice when you know you can do no more and that all hope is lost?

"These new cities, are they profitable?" Montezuma looked out of his palace widow, upon the harbor where hundreds of ships and hundreds of thousands of men of the First East Army.
"Some are, some soon will be, all of them are waving the Aztec flag, and are sending in their taxes like any ordinary citizen, they even have their own militias.....this is not a drag down, but with the right organization, they will contribute to the empire, in their own small way." Montezuma didn't really care, he knew all of this already, he called in his advisers to update him on Khan's latest movements.

"Do you have anything else to report before we make our final plans for the war?" Montezuma calmy walked to his throne and sat down with divine pressance.
"My lord, our cities are nearly compleate with the new factorys, and will soon be producing new tanks, if i may say so, these are amazing machines, I do not know how Brennus can hope to stand against our might!"

Montezuma dismissed his council for the day. It was all coming together, Montezuma would be the ruler of the earth soon enough. His choice in god's could not be more perfect, Perpentach has given mighty gifts, and the other gods seem weakened, no longer interfering with affairs, some even leaving. That night he dreamed the same dream he had dreamnt for the past century, a soft glowing golden ball, buzzing, trying to get his attention. Montezuma by this time was able to control his dreams, he tried to stear his attention away, and came face to face with darkness, illuminated by 2 eyes, a primal scream, and pain.

"LORD MONTEZUMA, URGENT NEWS!" Montezuma bolted up and out of instinct threw his knife at his chief guard, glancing off of his armor. Montezuma closed his eyes and got out of bed, trying to clam himself. In his audience chamber sat Isabella, or whoever she is.

"Well, what a surprise my queen, what brings you to Tenochtitlan at this late hour, do you not have a war to fight?"

Isabella rose and took a few fleeting steps toward Montezuma, "not anymore..." Her voice was a whisper, and Montezuma knew what happened.

-The Great War-

One of the defining moments of the Aztecian people, Celtic lands were decimated by the combined armies of the west and east coasts of Aztecia.
The tanks of the Western army obliterated American and the few outlying cites of Celtic lands, soon to move into The core of Celtic with the newly formed Second Western army soon on the way, the aztec people could only hope that the tanks of the west would roll over eastern celtic lands.

Civ4ScreenShot0060-1.jpg

The Eastern Army had less success, after their landing, multiple armys of the celts attacked, and with minimal Artillery and Tanks, they moved slowly with their vast infantry battalions, hoping to take another few cities, they rested in the former Celtic capitol, the next year would bring about the modern era, that would change everything.

Johnathon sent his soldiers ahead to help the Koreans, he on the other hand was looking for the Great tree itself, this would be his only opportunity to find the spirit that had helped the Aztec people, and who Montezuma had betrayed. Up to the top he went, but he could not find the tree he was searching for, what he found however....was the soft tingle of bells........
