Do you build or buy your first few settlers?

I have been assuming that Granary and Monument should be built immediately in every new city?
Yes? No?

It depends on how you're playing and on what you're trying to achieve. Plan at the very beginning of the game, usually based on what the land is like around your capital and how many resources there are, how many cities you want your initial expansion phase to consist of.

If this is quite a high number then the opening policy of Liberty is often worth taking and should then be leveraged by hard-building settlers in the capital. If Liberty isn't taken then rush buying settler/s with early gold is certainly viable.

One thing you should be trying to do is get the National College built in the capital either before your first additional city is founded or as soon as possible after your second, or third. This should depend on how many really good city sites are around you and how important you think it is to grab some land based on what your scouts discover about your surroundings.

I almost always use my first 1500 or so gold to rush buy a library in the capital and then to rush buy at least one worker my second or third city, and often I'll rush buy another library to hasten getting the National College underway.

I'd prioritize this over granary/monument.

Granary isn't as important in Civ V as it was in III and IV actually. Monument, yes, I usually build it, but prioritize Workshops/Librarys.

Considering that I only want to have 3 cities and lots of puppets, no I don't buy any settlers. :)

I generally take Liberty and hard-build Settlers in the capital.

The first build in satellite cities is a Colosseum to keep feeding Happiness to the expansion beast.

I do not see the need to buy a settler, there too expensive and when the patch comes out, they will be more expensive, so build 3 to 4 then puppet the rest unless I need a coastal city.

if ur asking do you build a settler as opposed to a monument or granary in new cities i would say no. monuments are usually the first thing i build in newly founded cities.

ATM I build and buy settlers if I'm REXing. I can get the cash for a settler pretty early if needs be - need an AI with cash - but with the changes to settlers coming in the patch I may have to adapt.

As for granary and monument... it depends though I would very rarly if ever go gran in the first few builds. If I have no immediate pressures for border expansion then maybe I'll go something before the monument, but usually I do go monument first as I like to get blocker cities down fast.

Plus with the new patch the Liberty Collective Rule Social Policy will give you a free Settler (and Settler production is also increased by 50% if you do decide to build one).

^ this.

Of course as has been said it all depends on what kind of game you intend to play/what sort of start you go after like NC first, map, starting loc etc etc.

I usually do an early NC now, but may have bought a settler that is ready to drop when complete.

It's an interesting choice especially with civs that can get some extra early gold like Spain or uhhh Songhai? with the extra barb camp gold.
