I was playing one of the MesoAmerican conquest on Prince. I had found myself making massive expansions out and was close to fufilling the scenareo conditions (about 75 turns to go) however quickly my military collapsed and the enemy started taking my cities.
On Civ 2 I have managed to play and win up to Emporor level however on this Civ 2 game I was left with four cities and was being attacked on both fronts - another 10 turns and I would have collapsed completely.
However holding off my oponents just long enough meant I took a tiny score victory based on my earlier greatness - this narrow victory was for me very satisfying.
I would aggree however if you simply become massive and wait to win rather than trying for any of the other victory conditions is no fun - and on the higher difficulty settings its generally fruitless, even the small enemies will make a shot at a spaceship or gather support for a diplomatic victory.
