OK, as an ex-sys admin I should look after my data better than anyone else, right?

Well, apparantly not. Despite being fascist over backup stratagies at my work, I have always seemed to be a failure at protecting myself. One of the most annoying aspects is that I have a seperate HDD just for this purpose, and a CD burner too.

My 80Gb HDD crashed last week taking down a 160Gb RAID array. I lost about 6 months of personal development / civ saves / emails / downloaded stuff, and it really really hurt.

Can you tell me if you back up data and stuff? I want to know that I'm not the only stupid idiot who thought it wouldn't happen to me (even though it has happened to me before...).

Edit: Typo

At work we back up everthing daily and the client stuff every half hour. At home I back up my homework/really good sim cities onto a Zip Disk after I'm done

I'm not really good at remembering it, but make a backup everytime I reformat, which is like 3-4 times a year. There's always something I forget though:(
My dad want to backup his files a bit more often so I wrote a VBA program that semds a mail with these files every week to his job.
If you know anything about programming, it shouldn't be too hard to make one that copies all the files/folders you want to the separate HD once a week or day.:)

im an idiot too
i only back up when i reformat

I have about 1.5 GB of backed up files. I back it up on three places. Once a month I back everything up on one of my partitions that I set aside just for that purpose. I then back up those same files about every two months on another computer on the network. Then about every 6 months I back up those files to two CD-RWs.

However, I only do this for my home network and computer.

No, and don't bloody remind me about it :ack:

DO IT NOW PILLAGER!!!

No, not really. Despite the fact that I lost about 100 pages worth of personal writings a few weeks ago, I still don't really do it. I do it occiasonally, usually after I get a crash-scare. Kind of like how I only put on a seatbelt when there is a near-miss.

I back up every month or so on the less important stuff, and more important stuff, I back up immediately.

Where I used to work (10+ years ago), the DST's most quoted line: "Did you back it up?" He would say this every time that someone had a HD crash, or other problem resulting in lost information. Often, he would be saying it to people that had already been told before. I learned the easy way from their mistake of not backing up. On some things, I have multiple back up copies.

At home I hardly ever back up except for stuff that I download with the purpose of putting to CD (ex. 701MB movies).

At work I save important documents to the network and modify them directly from there.

I try to keep two copies of important files - one at home and one at work. All work files are auto backed up every night to tape (takes 8 hours!)

The hard bit is deciding what is important.

I think the rule is 'whatever you didn't back up'.
