Do you ever do something just because you want to?

I haven't seen anyone else mention this, but it was fun and you should all do it at least once: determine up front what kind of "nonviolent" victory you will pursue. Then, play as "peacefully" as this game will allow; which is to say, don't DOC just to conquer.
But, here's the gimmick: consider yourself the world "peacekeeper" and vow that NO NATION will be eliminated.

This sounds like a lot of fun, actually. For full effect, of course, one must play as Amurrica. No one can appoint themselves as world-police better than Good Ol' Amurrica.
Moderator Action: Please no nation bashing.
We want to have a friendly atmosphere here, with people from all over the world. Please don't attack anyone's country in such a way.

Well, one of my most amusing experiences happened in a recent game when I noticed that 4 city states were bordering each other along the Arabian peninsula on an earth map. So when Montezuma's "totally didn't see this coming" betrayal came and war broke out I gifted my entire army to Sydney for the laughs since the other 3 were allied with Monty while I pumped out newer, better units for myself. Then I went around beating up the other 3 city states but letting Sydney get the last hit so it could conquer them. When I noticed how close his capital was to Sydney after this I decided to keep it going, razed the other 2 cities he had and wore down the capital again to let Sydney take it. Then the Ottomans decided to declare on me .... his lands were north of Sydney's now impressive empire. About 2 dozen turns later and using the same tactics I was left with a world map in which the 2nd highest 'land owned' ranking would have been a city state (though to be honest, Sydney might have controlled even more land than I did at that point, making them #1).
It was totally unplanned and only came about due to the random starting locations, but it was also one of the most enjoyable games I'd played for quite a while and left a smile on my face as I gazed upon the glorious empire I'd helped my little city state ally acquire.

But, here's the gimmick: consider yourself the world "peacekeeper" and vow that NO NATION will be eliminated. That means, when another nation is being devoured by an AI (or even gets conquered completely), you have to "restore" him to maintain the balance. If you can, go to war to recover his cities (all or some) before he is wiped out. If not, then when you can, go restore his capital (which will bring him back into the game) and then get a couple more cities back for him. Do this will all nations.
If a nation gets too big, prune him back a bit (keep the cities or raze them, or even give them to a less fortunate civ).
The point here is: restore and/or maintain balance as you go on to win some victory other than domination.
In my games (when I play this way) I'll even gift units to some nations to help them resist a stronger enemy. That can take some maneuvering (diplomatically) so you can get open borders with them first.
Great fun and significantly more challenging.

this is mostly how I play, and it's a fun challenge.

I buy land just so as to have an 'even' boarder w/the enemy. Nothing pisses me off more than England owning one piece of MY mountain or ocean(I actually do do oceans, no matter the cost, if I am content w/peace between us).

sometimes i'll do stuff with no goal other than just to annoy the ai, like taking some of their land with a great artist or nuking them or something.

there was also one time i played badly on purpose in civ 4 multiplayer just because it made somebody mad. that was pretty fun.

If I see Ramses I make it my goal to destroy him. No matter what repercussions it may have i always kill him.

The reason hate him is because I was trying for a diplo vic and he took a ton of city states so i couldn't win that way. He proceeded to win a science vic. Now I have made it my goal to exterminate him in every game I play.

I also nuked gandhi the turn before I won a science victory just so I could say i nuked gandhi.
