Do you have to warmonger with autocracy?

Returning to the opening post the answer is as follows:

You don't have to do anything with any ideology.
You can achieve any victory type with any ideology.

Quote for truth. You can add social policies, civ selections, map type, and difficulty to the list.

You really can do anything in this game if you're good enough at what you're trying to do. I've gotten 4 city peaceful tradition science victory on Deity as Mongolia putting no points in any ideology, and no points in Rationalism (and, I'm pretty sure I can replicate this consistently). But, you'll certainly have an easier time doing it in the ways the game actually wants you to play. And the game gives autocracy no science/spaceship bonuses for a reason.

I guess it's with Futurism and not building any guilds before ideologies.

Brazil is an especially good civ for that. The Brazilwood camps generate enough culture so that you can keep getting policies while not having Guilds, you get 50% GWAM creation during your Golden Ages, and you usually start in the jungle so you don't have a lot of production and it's nice to delay building the guilds and build other stuff instead.

Regarding the use of Autocracy for a cultural victory, I have sped up quite a few cultural victories by eliminating the other high culture civ, either myself or by bribing its neighbors. It helps of course that the usual warmongers that would like to help you with that (Shaka, Attila etc) are typically not big into culture, although Alexander and Monty can actually generate quite a lot of culture.

Re: Autocracy and Culture Victory:

Just to clarify, Futurism is quite a small bonus indeed for Culture Autocracy, as +100 Tourism (even per civ, rather than in total) normally only the equivalent of two to ten turns of culture pressure, depending on how high you push your normal output.

The really big boost comes from Cult of Personality, as those % bonuses stack. They key here is being very careful how you set up the wars, and carrying out several wars in parallel.

Say you have France and Brazil pumping out a mass of culture, and you have four other nations you're already close to Dominant with. If you can pay France and Brazil to fo to war with those four other nations, you can then declare war on those same four nations, and get +200% Tourism for at least 10 turns, and probably longer. Thats a lot bigger bonus than Futurism.

Re: Autocracy and Science:

You can't buy Spaceship Parts with Gold like Freedom can, and you can't Great Engineer them like Order can. This does slow you down a little.

Actually though, the main factor in Science Victories is getting the tech lead first, and Autocracy can be good at Science because:

1) It is the best Happiness generating ideology. Happiness = more growth and more population = more science.
2) Its the best Ideology for keeping a huge army. Huge army = control over when you go to war (i.e. you DoW on others, not them on you) = easier to build and move spaceship parts without panicking about surprise backstab attacks on you.
3) Its the best Ideology for making war from a tech disadvantage. This means you can focus on space tech without losing all the wars you have to fight, and can use spies to steal techs along paths you're not focusing on.
4) Its the best Ideology for kicking ass. This means that if someone else is getting close to their victory condition and will reach it before you finish your spaceship, you can go smack them down.

Thats not to say Autocracy is the BEST ideology for science victory, just that it is isn't completely lacking in advantages that serve that victory goal.

Futurism is 250 Tourism per GWAM now. It's not going to win you the game, but it is going to get you influential over low culture civs pretty fast after hitting Autocracy and quite a bit before you can get Hotels up.

So it is! I hadn't noticed.

Futurism really only helps when you get to ideology relatively fast. When you are generating 10 tourism per turn popping 4 or so GWAMs in quick succession gets you 1000 tourism with everybody. If you are late to get to ideology and are generating 50+ tourism then it would not be worth the pick.
