Do you need COAL to run the factory or just build it?

No. If you build hydro plants, nuclear plants or parts factory you need aluminum/uranium to run them though.

Don't the run at a penalty if you don't have the coal? Just like units get penalties if you go negative on the resource.

I know I need it to build factories, but say I trade for 5 Coal and build 5 factories... will I need the coal anymore after that?
Not sure what exactly you are asking. When you want to build a factory you need 1 coal to build it and that 1 coal remains "tied up" in the factory to cover the operational coal needs of that factory. So you cannot re-use that 1 coal for something else. Also, you don't need a second coal to sustain the plant for production later on.

The initial 1 coal is all you need to build and run the factory.

If you traded coal to build the factory, and you the trade expires, then you are running at a strategic resource deficit and I expect your factory to be a lot less effective (like with swordsmen fighting without iron).

You EXPECT? Or do you KNOW that it is less effective. That's the question.

Test it, is the only way I think.

I would presume it would just stop working. But I'd never thought of the issue before. Curious to see what the score is.

It is really simple. Say you have no coal, you buy 4 coal for 180 gold from an AI. You build 4 factories in 4 of your cities. After 30 turns the coal for gold deal is canceled. Your resource bar now says -4 coal BUT the factories will still work, with no penalty.
However, if you would want to build a 5th factory, you would need to buy 5 coal in order to have a "free" coal.

nope.
going negative in strategics only affects units.
you can have a negative
coal, aluminum and uranium with your
factory, hydro plant and nuclear plant still running 100% effectively, however your
ironclad, modern armor and giant death robot will have a -50% combat penalty.

and btw this topic has been covered plenty of times before if you want to use search.

When you build a factory or some such building, it 'eats' a resource, in this case, coal. You don't get the coal back unless you sell the factory or the factory is destroyed in a war when the city is taken over or is razed. I other words, the building acts as a kind of unit that depends on a resource like horseman needs horse, swordsman needs iron, etc. I think that sums it up nicely, eh? :D

Except you only need it to built it. After it is built, it will still work fine if you lose your coal, you will just be at a negative resource.

Yes, it would sum it up nicely if it were correct. See above posts.
