The thread title says it all. Do you play a lot with modified game files? (Yes, even the tiniest change counts.) If yes, what changes have you made?

I almost always play with modified files. I have made a little mod extending the tech tree a little bit into the future, a few terrain changes, and three maps (I play ToT, and used CivConverter to port the MGE graphics; worked a charm).

Every now and then.

Actually, I made quite a few suggestions in an older thread (though I still have yet to try many of them). If I find it, I'll post a link.

Yes, but nothing that affects the basic rules of the game. I've modified the files to allow for Barbarian Wrath and Deity+1 and 2.

I modified the terrain graphics. They were a little too harsh on the eyes. ;)

Most of the time I too play with default files but recently I've begun to use modified graphics, dont care for some of the units, also Ive fixed some of the people graphics, minor cosmetical changes, like emphasis and such.

I like the game as is, though some game mechanics are quite madening, but those have been griped about enough, everybody knows what I mean :)

Changing ToT's graphics is mandatory. ;)

I've changed virtually all of the Original game's graphics: units, terrain, cities, people, as well as some of the icons. I've also changed the game's 'skin', ie, city.bmp, dialog.bmp and civwin_back.bmp. The static and resource sprite files got some treatment, too. I don't use the animated units files. The game now looks very little like the original. I've made no modifications to the rules.txt and game.txt files, except to change some of the Americanese to English.

Come to think of it, is it possible to change ToT so that it looks like Civ2.42?

I think if you can find the .gif files for the original, then yes, all you would need to do is save them over the ones used in ToT.

Yes, pretty much everything except the unit shields and health bars, but there's better stuff around these days, so I'm not sure why you'd want to revert to decade-old graphics.

No, it requires a bit more work than that. If you use CivConverter, like The Person did (first post), you may save yourself some time. CivConverter doesn't convert perfectly, so you'll still have some cleaning up to do.

I would say no, except that I use a city name file that has extra entries for the Romans and Americans so I don't get duplications.
