I enjoy making stategic game maps. This of course requires replaying the same map over and over as I seek improvements.
I'd like to know your thoughts and preferences surrounding all matters and manners of maps.
Fire away.

EDIT> Poll closed!
But I'd still like to hear your comments! :thanx:

I play what I get, except if the start is totally heinous.

Never!

I have never played an actual world map and will play one eventually just to take over the "real" world. But like my friend sealman said the true joy of the game comes from discovering the lay of the land.

I agree with you all that seeing through the black fog in discovery is part of the challenge, but that only lasts during the earliest part of the game. I usually work quickly to know more than the enemy. I rarely trade maps TO the other civs until my domain is clearly established ... and even then rarely.
I'm curious. At what stage in the game is the blackness usually gone? (on average.)

Never. Normally, I want to change my rivals and settings so the "Play Last World Option" is useless. And I like the challenges posed by the random map generator.

Never. It's not as fun when you know where everything/one is. Although, I've had some maps which looked very similar to maps I've played, or seen in the forums.

I'm enjoying all your comments.
One good thing ... with everyone using maps like Kleenex, I won't soon run out of work.
I'd love to hear thoughts as to what makes a good map.
:scan: . . . . Keep those Votes coming ! :thanx:

Never. I like to play on new worls

Nope. I like the early game the most & knowing where everything is/who's behind that dark fog takes some of the fun out of it.

Why the poll closed? I couldn't vote.

Sorry. I limited the time period when I set up the poll.
I think it's clear that most players prefer to play the map only once.
It appears I'm in the minority, but then I usually play very complex maps that I use to study various types of strategies. I guess the fact that I played chess for years has made me more accustomed to a similar playing field.
At times I totally remove the fog of war from the game which adds greater intensity from the start. It still allows trading of maps for seeing AI positions.

I played my maps once for vanilla civ. Then I went back through them and updated them for PTW, and made more new maps. Then I went through those and added volcanoes and plagues and marshes for Conquests, and replayed them again. Then I made a few new maps. Now I am adding more stuff with my mod, and replaying the maps again. So in some cases I have played my maps 4 times- but from different starting locations, of course.

Thanks for sharing. Good to know there are others with similar perspectives.
Often the maps are so complex, that by simply starting in different locations, it feels like a totally new map and it can be difficult to discern where you are on the map until after much of the fog is removed.
I've never had two games on the same map pan out the same way. All it takes is a few different decisions and the outcome rapidly changes.
I do admit that a new map and the unknown adds challenge to the discovery phase of the game.

I don't replay the same map, with the exception of the world map. But I don't play this map very often.
