Does anyone agree with me that Sid Meier's Alpha Centuri is the creepiest & wierdest game Sid Meier has ever made?
 
How is it creepy? The game is brilliant for it's time and visionary in it's ability to tell the story of a possible future of mankind. What's the creepy?
 
Perhaps he's referring to ledtim's 'Yang Transsexual' theory? :confused:
 
Yeah I see he's been in there, could be, but Yang is just one messed up mofo, the rest of the game is good.
 
Hey, Yang's cool with me, I was just saying that the whole gender switching issue, whilst perfectly fine and all, is potentially disturbing for some people. I don't hate the guy/girl for it though.

I take the point about the horror atmosphere; I guess it is kind of out-there compared to most other Sid titles, but that comes with the SF territory I suppose. Some of the scenarios that shipped with ToT were also, iirc, rather creepy and weird, but maybe they don't count as Sid's own creations :confused:

Either way, creepy/weird = fun!
 
When compared to other Firaxis games, yes and yes. Unless you count Escape from Zombie Island 2 for Civ3, although that's third-party.
 
What I love about Alpha Centauri is that it had more than just great gameplay; the game had it's own special sort of aura to it. Everything in the game -- right down to the colours used in the start menu -- came together to give it something close to a personality.

However much I love Civ4, I feel it lacks the "special something" for me to like it as much as SMAC.


A good deal of this has to do with Bryan Reynolds' and other members of his team that have since left Firaxis (I think; otherwise Civ 3 and 4 would have shared some of the references to Western Philosophy found in SMAC). Another aspect is that of known vs unknown. We're all familiar with personalities like Alexander the Great and Stalin, as well as the major trends in history. All this leaves little to the imagination, especially when you compare it to the wide, wide world of Planet, Deirde, and Nwabudike Morgan. =D
 
I always thought the soundbites accompanying almost everything were absolutely ingenious.

It was novel, imaginative and innovative; game-wise, it combines everything good about Civ2 with the features of Civ4, but still stands unique.
